Two doubles pairs have qualified for the competition.
The BWF World Tour Finals 2023 is scheduled to be held from December 13-17 in Hangzhou, China. A total of eight players across all the five categories qualify based on their performance this season. Malaysia will have its presence in doubles category – Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik (men’s doubles) and Chen Tang Jie/Toh Ee Wei (mixed doubles).
Qualification mark ended with the conclusion of China Masters 2023 and several badminton players qualified by slight margins. Former world champion in men’s doubles Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik had a good season reaching the last eight in several events but on the contrary did not conquer many titles. However, with a consistent run they finished the season by accumulating 88,940 points; just ahead of Japanese pair Hoki Takuro and Kobayashi Yugo.
The WR-3 have won only one title this year at the Denmark Open and have finished runners-up thrice. On the other hand, the mixed doubles pairing of Chen Tang Jie/Toh Ee Wei finished 9th by securing 78,040 points. Surprisingly, they got through as only two pairs from a single nation are allowed to participate – China already had three pairs in the top 8.
The shuttlers to have missed out by slight margins are NG Tze Yong and Lee Zii Jia who finished 10th and 11th respectively by scoring 73,180 and 72,760 points. The former enjoyed a dream run this season and was one of the top youngsters to emerge this season. Lee Zii Jia did not have a good first half before he took an indefinite break from the sport.
Post his return, the 25-year-old had few below-par results but overcame those to achieve relative success. Although, he missed out on qualifying for the season ending tournament, Lee Zii Jia finished the season on a positive note.
