Lakshya Sen is only Indian left in the All England Open 2024.
Day three of the All England Open 2024 ended in a series of disappointing results for India. The only shining light for India was Lakshya Sen, who staged an extraordinary comeback at the All England Open in Birmingham to defeat Anders Antonsen 24-22, 11-21, 21-14 and book his place in the quarterfinals.
Trailing 2-8 in the deciding third game, Sen mirrored his previous encounter’s scoreline in Paris, only this time, he reversed his fortunes. With a remarkable run of winning 15 of the last 17 points, Sen secured a victory against the formidable Anders Antonsen, who had been undefeated on tour until the previous week.
Except for Lakshya Sen, the day was filled with underwhelming outcomes for India’s badminton players, the top-ranked pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty experienced a notable upset. Riding high from their French Open victory, they initially defeated the Indonesian team of Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan.
However, their journey came to an abrupt halt in the Round of 16 as they faced defeat at the hands of Muhammad Shohibul Fikri and Bagas Maulana, the 2022 All-England champions, with final scores of 16-21 and 15-21, leading to their exit from the tournament.
The women’s doubles pair Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa also bowed out of the tournament after round of 16 clash. After a promising start against China’s Zhang and Zheng, they were unable to sustain their momentum, ultimately losing 11-21, 21-11, 21-11.

PV Sindhu, India’s top female shuttler, faced an early departure from the prestigious championship. World No.1 An Se Young of South Korea delivered a commanding performance, defeating Sindhu in straight sets, 21-19, 21-11. This marked Se Young’s sixth consecutive victory over Sindhu.
Sindhu, who had a challenging 2023 season, showed signs of a comeback at the Paris Open 2024, but fell short in the quarterfinals. Despite a win over Germany’s Yvonne Li at the All England Super 1000 event, Sindhu struggled against the top-ranked Se Young, who continued her winning streak following her gold medal victories at the World Championship and Asian Games
