Tai Tzu-ying has the most All England Open titles among the contenders

The prestigious All England Open is back this year and the players are eager to perform well and claim the title. As one of the four Super 1000 tournaments held annually, it stands out for its historical significance, being the oldest of its kind. Originating from Guildford’s 1898 event, the world’s first open competition, it has a storied legacy.

For many players, winning the All England title is a dream, with some holding it in higher esteem than even the World Championships. The All England Open 2024 is set to display the finest talent in women’s singles badminton.

The women’s singles competition promises to be a fierce contest with many upcoming players and some established stars in the fray. Let’s turn our gaze to these formidable contenders, each vying for glory in the one of the world’s most revered badminton theaters.

An Se-young

The Korean badminton prodigy, An Se-young, is set to defend her title. Last year, she clinched her first All England Open title by defeating Chen Yufei in a thrilling match (21-17, 10-21, 21-19). Having started the year with a victory at the Malaysia Open, she is well-prepared to retain her title.

In Round 2, she is likely to confront P.V. Sindhu, whom she has never lost to, yet the Indian player could present a challenge. An Se-young is expected to face Han Yue in the quarterfinals and Akane Yamaguchi in the semifinals. Despite a challenging draw, her capabilities suggest she can emerge victorious.

Chen Yufei

Olympic champion Chen Yufei narrowly missed out on securing her second title in the previous edition, losing to An Se-young in the finals. This year, she aims to claim the title and while she may not be at her peak, her track record in Super 1000 tournaments indicates that she remains a formidable contender.

She faces a favorable draw and will compete against either Wang Zhiyi or Carolina Marin in the quarterfinals, followed by a potential semifinal against Tai Tzu-ying or He Bingjiao.

Akane Yamaguchi

Akane Yamaguchi eyes her second All England title. Last year, she was defeated in the semifinals by Chen Yufei.

Determined to triumph this year, she faces a tough draw, starting with Zhang Yiman in Round 1 and Pornpawee Chochuwong in Round 2. If she advances, a semifinal clash with An Se-young awaits, promising an exciting encounter given their riveting rivalry.

Tai Tzu-ying

Tai Tzu-ying, the final member of the ‘Fab Four,’ is in excellent form, having won the India Open earlier this year. With retirement on the horizon, she is eager to secure another All England title.

Holding the most All England titles among the current top eight players, she has won the championship three times. However, her path includes challenging matches against veterans Nozomi Okuhara and Ratchanok Intanon in the early rounds, with a potential quarterfinal against He Bingjiao, who could thwart her ambitions. A semifinal against Chen Yufei is likely if she progresses.

He Bing Jiao

Chinese player He Bingjiao is vying for her first All England title. Her journey to the quarterfinals appears smooth, where she could face Tai Tzu-ying in what promises to be a captivating match.

Jiao, capable of disrupting the ‘Fab Four’s’ dominance, could be the dark-horse in the women’s singles category.
