The All England Open is the oldest badminton tournament.
The world’s oldest badminton tournament, the All England Open, is a BWF Super 1000 level event in the BWF World Tour calendar. Also known as the All England Open Badminton Championships, this tournament has been taking place since 1899. Initially, it started as the doubles competition before the singles categories were introduced a year later.
Until 1977, the All England Open was considered the unofficial World Championships in badminton before the sports’ governing body introduced the official championships. The All England Open has only been halted twice since its inception, on both occasions due to the World War I and II. Great Britain, as the host nation, dominated the tournament and won titles in all five divisions for over three decades.
In 1939, Denmark and Canada broke British dominance at the England Open, heralding a new era in badminton. The subsequent years saw Asians making history: Malaysia claimed the men’s doubles in 1949, and Wong Peng Soon became the first Asian men’s singles champion in 1950.
India joined the ranks in 1980 with Prakash Padukone’s win, followed by Pullela Gopichand in 2001. In the Open era, starting in late 1979, Asian players, especially Chinese, dominated. Lin Dan’s six men’s singles titles exemplify this.
Despite interruptions due to World Wars, the England Open remains a testament to badminton’s rich history and Asian prowess on the global stage. Here are the list of title winners at England Open.
