Top Indian duo Satwik-Chirag withdraw from the BWF US Open 2025

As the BWF US Open 2025 prepares to get underway in Iowa from June 24 to 29, a wave of withdrawals has reshaped the tournament landscape. While the Super 300 event may not have the prestige of a Super 1000, it remains a vital stop on the BWF World Tour and a golden opportunity for rising stars to shine.

Yet, several seasoned and high-ranking shuttlers have pulled out for various reasons, including injury recovery and scheduling priorities.

In men’s singles, three of India’s leading names – HS Prannoy, Kiran George, and Meiraba Luwang have withdrawn, dealing a major blow to the Indian contingent. Malaysia’s Ng Tze Yong, who entered under a protected ranking, is also among the notable absentees.

Ireland’s Nhat Nguyen and Thailand’s Kantaphon Wangcharoen are two other top-50 players who will miss the event. Their absence has opened the way for lower-ranked contenders to step up.

The women’s singles draw is also heavily impacted by withdrawals. China’s Olympic champion Chen Yufei will not be competing in Iowa. Indian stars Malvika Bansod and Anupama Upadhyaya have also pulled out, along with Canada’s Michelle Li. These withdrawals leave the women’s singles draw wide open for new names to make an impact.

In men’s doubles, India’s star duo Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, former World No. 1s, will not feature at the event. Multiple other top-50 pairs, such as Jin Yong/Na Sung Seung (Korea) and Lu Chen/Chen Sheng Fa (Chinese Taipei), have also opted out.

Women’s doubles also sees some major withdrawals, including Chinese Taipei’s Teng Chun Hsun/Yang Chu Yun and Indian pairs such as Rutaparna Panda/Swetaparna Panda. China’s Li Wen Mei and Luo Yi are also absent.

Mixed doubles sees a particularly long list of withdrawals. China’s Jiang Zhen Bang and Huang Ke Xin, along with France’s William Villeger and Flavie Vallet, have pulled out. India’s Rohan Kapoor and Ruthvika Shivani Gadde also won’t feature in the draw. Other absentees include the experienced Julien Maio/Lea Palermo (France) and Thai duo Phuwanat Horbanluekit/Sapsiree Taerattanachai.

While these withdrawals impact the overall competitiveness of the US Open 2025, they also present a rare opportunity for emerging players to earn valuable ranking points and showcase their talent on the international stage.
