HS Prannoy creates upset, will face Lakshya Sen in pre-quarters of BWF World Championships 2022

There were a lot of exciting matches on a very eventful day of the tournament.

The 2022 BWF World Championships are in full swing in the city of Tokyo, Japan. The third day of the event saw several high-profile clashes in various different categories. One of the favourites for the Men’s Singles title, Lakshya Sen sailed into the pre-quarters alongside compatriot Prannoy H.S who caused a huge upset by defeating Kento Momota of Japan.

There was disappointment for the Indian contingent in the face of Kidambi Srikanth getting knocked out from the Round 2 of the tournament. He was the silver medal winner in the previous edition. Furthermore, three pairs in Women’s Doubles lost their respective matches to bring an end to the country’s challenge in that category. 

Here is a roundup of all the major and other exciting results from Wednesday’s action at the 2022 BWF World Championships in Tokyo:

Men’s Singles

Prannoy H.S. was exquisite in his performance against second seed Kento Momota. He beat the Japanese on his own turf by a 21-17 21-16 score. The 2022 CWG gold medallist Lakshya Sen will face Prannoy in Round 3 after a 21-17, 21-10 win over Spain’s Luis Enrique Penalver. Kidambi Srikanth, last year’s silver medallist was at the receiving end of a shock defeat by Zhao Junpeng. The Chinese shuttler won by 21-9, 21-17 inside 34 minutes only. 

Women’s Singles

The second seed in women’s singles Tai Tzu Ying won her Round 2 match comfortably against Martina Repiska. She beat the Slovakian shuttler by 21-9. 21-12. China’s Chen Yufei was also among the winners as she got the better of Soniia Cheah thanks to a 21-17, 21-15 scoreline. 

Busanan Ongbamrungphan won her contest against Yvonne Li by 20-22, 21-16, 22-20 to set up a clash with Saina Nehwal in the next round.

Men’s Doubles

Indian pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty got off to a brilliant start by sailing into the next round. The 2022 CWG gold medallists took 24 minutes to beat Solis Jonathan and Anibal Marroquin of Guatemala by 21-8, 21-10. Another Indian pair that was on form and caused a huge upset was Dhruv Kapila and M.R. Arjun who beat Denmark’s Kim Astrup and Anders Rasmussen in straight games thanks to a 21-17, 21-16 score.

Women’s Doubles

Ashwini Ponappa and N. Sikki Reddy’s BWF Championships journey came to an end. The Indian pair lost by 21-15, 21-10 to top seeds Jia Yifan and Chen Qingchen of China. Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand also lost to Pearly Tan and Muralitharan Thinaah of Malaysia by a 21-8, 21-17 score. 

Finally, to end India’s challenge in the Women’s Doubles category, Shikha Gautam and Ashwini Bhatt lost by 21-5, 18-21, 21-13 to South Korean fourth-seeded pair of Kim So-Yeong and Kong Hee-Yong.

Mixed Doubles

The Mixed Doubles category saw three matches that went all the way to three games. Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue of France beat Po-Hsuan Yang and Ling Fang Hu of Chinese Taipei by 10-21, 25-23, 21-16. Yong Hee and Wei Tan of Singapore won by 19-21, 21-11, 21-17 against higher seeded pair of Yuki Kaneko and Misaki Matsutomo of Japan. 

Lastly, Mark Lamsfuss and Isabel Lohau of Germany went past by 15-21, 21-13, 21-18 against Hiroki Midorikawa and Natsu Saito of Japan.
