Saina Nehwal off to a winning start on day 2 of BWF World Championships 2022
There was a lot of exciting action on the second day of the prestigious tournament.
The 2022 edition of the BWF World Championships is currently taking place in Tokyo, Japan. It will see the best badminton players from across the globe fight for the medals for the next few days. Following an exciting first day of badminton which saw plenty of top players take the stage in the Men’s Singles category, Tuesday had top seeds in the Women’s Singles starting their campaign.
Saina Nehwal was back in action and got off to a winning start by beating Cheung Ngan Yi of Hong Kong. The Indian contingent had a joyous first day with players like Lakshya Sen, Kidambi Srikanth, and Prannoy H.S recording impressive wins. There are a lot of expectations from the Indian squad which has several medal winners from the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
P.V. Sindhu was supposed to play at the tournament but had to withdraw due to an injury. However, there were a lot of other high-profile players to witness on the second day. Here is a roundup of the results from the 2022 BWF World Championships in Tokyo:
Men’s Singles
World No.1 Victor Axelsen was in impressive form as he won his Round 2 tie against Mark Caljouw by a 21-19, 21-10 score. Sixth seed Anthony Ginting also continued his positive start with a 21-10, 21-16 win over Georges Paul of Mauritius.
Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei was among the winners on the day with a 21-15, 21-12 win over Jason Ho-Shue. However, the badminton gods were not smiling on 11th seed Rasmus Gemke who was at the receiving end of an upset by China’s Shi Yuqi who beat the Dane by 21-13, 21-16.
Women’s Singles
Saina Nehwal of India beat Hong Kong’s Cheung Ngan Yi by a 21-19, 21-9 score. Number one seed Akane Yamaguchi of Japan was mesmerizing in her 21-12, 21-15 win over Gregoria Tunjung of Indonesia. Third seed An Se-young of South Korea won her contest against Thuy Nguyen by a 21-18, 21-10 scoreline.
Chinese hopeful Wang Zhiyi was in a good flow against Denmark’s Line Christophersen who beat Malvika Bansod in the previous round. The 22-year-old took 35 minutes to ease past her opponent by a 21-15, 21-14 score.
Men’s Doubles
Indian pair of Krishna Garaga Vishnuvardhan Panjala lost their Round 1 tie to France’s Fabian Delrue and William Villeger. The pair were knocked out after losing in straight games with a 21-14, and 21-18 score. Jeppe Bay and Lasse Molhede of Denmark had to grind out a tough result against the valiant Sri Lankan pair of Sachin Dias and Buwaneka Goonethilleka. It took 55 minutes to settle the tie which ended 21-11, 18-21, 25-23 in the favour of the Europeans.
Women’s Doubles
Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand were in fabulous form as they went past Yeen Yuan Low and Valeree Siow by 21-11, and 21-13 in 31 minutes only. Ashwini Bhat and Shikha Gautam also won their contest against the Italian pairing of Martina Corsini and Judith Mair. They won in straight games by a 21-8, 21-14 score in 30 minutes.
Mixed Doubles
The BWF Championships journey for Ishaan Bhatnagar and Tanisha Crasto came to an end. They lost to 14th seeds Supak Jomkoh and Supissara Paewsampran of Thailand by a 21-14, 21-17 score. Following them was another Indian pair of Venkat Prasad and Juhi Dewangan who lost to Gregory Mairs and Jenny Moore of England with a 21-10, 23-21 score on the board.
