Lee Zii Jia will be Malaysia’s lone hope in singles at the BWF World Tour Finals 2024.
As the badminton season approaches its climax, five Malaysian players/pairs find themselves in a fierce battle to secure their spots in the prestigious BWF World Tour Finals 2024. The year-end tournament, which features the top eight players and pairs in each category, is a coveted goal for badminton shuttlers worldwide.
While many nations struggle to secure even a single spot in the prestigious BWF World Tour Finals, Malaysia has multiple players in the top 8. However, with only the top two pairs from each country eligible to qualify, the competition among Malaysian pairs is intensifying.
Hence, without further ado, let’s take a look at the five Malaysian shuttlers who are in a race to qualify for BWF World Tour Finals:
Malaysia shuttlers who can qualify for BWF World Tour Finals
5. Tan Pearly and Thinaah Muralitharan (Women’s Doubles)
In the Paris Olympics 2024, Tan and Thinaah created history by becoming the first-ever Malaysian semi-finalists at the women’s doubles event. Ranked fifth in the World Tour with 63,650 points, Tan Pearly and Thinaah Muralitharan are flying the Malaysian flag high in women’s doubles.
As the sole Malaysian pair in the top 25 of the BWF rankings, they don’t face internal competition but bear the responsibility of representing Malaysia in this category. Their consistent performances throughout the season have put them in a strong position, but they’ll need to maintain their form in the upcoming tournaments to secure their spot in the Finals.
4. Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin (Men’s Doubles)
Goh and Nur have displayed some spectacular and consistent performances this season. Currently sitting in third place with 77,400 points, Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin lead Malaysia’s charge in men’s doubles.
The duo recently won the prestigious China Open title defeating China’s He Ji Ting/Ren Xiang Yu in the final and followed it up with a title in the BWF 500 Arctic Open, beating Kim Astrup/Anders Rasmussen who are the number one pair in the race to BWF World Tour Finals.
Their impressive ranking puts them in a comfortable position for qualification, but with three other Malaysian pairs hot on their heels, they can’t afford to let their guard down. Every point in the upcoming tournaments will be crucial for them to maintain their lead and secure one of Malaysia’s two spots in Men’s doubles.

3. Lee Zii Jia (Men’s Singles)
Paris Olympic Bronze Medallist Lee Zii Jia is Malaysia’s brightest hope in men’s singles. He currently holds the fifth position with 69,900 points. Lee has consistently showcased his world-class skills throughout the season, placing him in a strong position to qualify for the Finals.
However, things have been shaky for the Malaysian star post-Olympics. As the nation’s top singles player, Lee carries the weight of expectation from the fans and will have to stay consistent in the upcoming tournaments to ensure a spot in the BWF World Tour finals.
2. Goh Soon Huat and Lai Shevon Jemie (Mixed Doubles)
Goh and Lai are the bronze medallists from the Asian Championships 2023 and recently made it to the China Open final. Ranked third in the World Tour with 73,370 points, Goh Soon Huat and Lai Shevon Jemie are in an excellent position to secure one of Malaysia’s two mixed doubles spots.
Their consistent high-level performances have kept them near the top of the rankings all season. However, with two other Malaysian pairs also in the top five, they face stiff competition from their compatriots.

Another pair contending for a spot in mixed doubles at the BWF World Tour Finals are Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei. They are currently ranked fourth in the World Tour with an impressive 76,280 points. This mixed doubles pair has been a force to be reckoned with throughout the season, consistently performing at the highest level.
Chen and Toh made it to two Super-300 Finals this year and also won the BWF 500 Korea Open. Their ranking not only puts them in prime position for World Tour Finals qualification but also makes them strong contenders for the title itself.
With so many players and pairs in contention, Malaysia has a good chance of making a significant impact at the BWF World Tour Finals, further cementing its status as a badminton powerhouse.
