China script new historic first in BWF World Tour Era with clean sweep at Hong Kong Open 2025

China became the first nation in recent history to complete the clean sweep.

China delivered a perfect performance at the Hong Kong Open 2025 finals on Sunday, setting a new first in badminton history.

After their flawless run at the BWF World Championships was denied last month, the badminton powerhouse bounced back in emphatic fashion at the Hong Kong Open 2025 completing a clean sweep of all five titles (men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles) at the BWF Super 500 event.

With this, China became the first country to achieve this feat in the BWF World Tour era.

The BWF World Tour started in 2018 and since then no nation has managed to win all five titles in a single competition, until China did it on Sunday (September 14).

They have come close previously on several occasions, including twice this season at the Japan Open and Malaysia Masters, before achieving this unique milestone at the Hong Kong Open.

Here’s a breakdown of how the events unfolded at the Hong Kong Open 2025

Men’s Singles

The men’s singles finals featured a thrilling clash between China’s Li Shifeng and India’s top shuttler Lakshya Sen, who made it to his first final of the season. However, the world no.4 ended Sen’s dream run in straight games 21-15, 21-12 to join historic accomplishment.

Women’s Singles

It was an all-Chinese affair in the women’s singles final at the Hong Kong Coliseum, where the world ranked #2 Wang Zhiyi edged past her compatriot Han Yue.

Zhiyi won 21-14 in the opener before sealing the final 24-22 in a dramatic tiebreaker against the World No.3.

Men’s Doubles

The men’s doubles final saw another heartbreak for the Indian contingent as their top pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty reached their first final of the season but fell short just nearly.

The Chinese pair of Liang Weikeng and Wang Chang rallied back from the first game loss to win the match in three games 19-21, 21-14, 21-17.

Women’s Doubles

The World No.4 Chinese duo of Jia Yifan and Zhang Shuxian overcame Japan’s Rin Iwanaga and Kie Nakanishi 21-17, 17-21, 21-15 in a the women’s doubles final battle.

Mixed Doubles

Once again, an all-Chinese final saw the World No.2 mixed doubles pair of Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping dominate Guo Xinwa and Chen Fanghui 21-14, 21-14 in just 38 minutes.

While this was China’s first-ever clean sweep in the BWF World Tour era. However, they have achieved this milestone previously, with eight clean sweeps across the BWF Super Series + World Tour Era. Previous instances include:

At the BWF World Championships 2025 China won two titles from four finals entry. The World no.1 men’s singles shuttler Shi Yuqi defeated Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn 19-21, 21-10, 21-18. This makred Yuqi’s first men’s singles world championship title.

In the women’s doubles Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning won against Malaysia’s Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan 21-14, 20-22, 21-17.
