The former World Number 6 will face Lee Chia Hao of Taipei in the first round.

Lakshya Sen has established himself as one of India’s top badminton players, with notable achievements such as a gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, an India Open Super 500 title, and a bronze at the 2021 World Championships. However, his recent form has been inconsistent, with multiple first-round exits in the past few months. Despite this, he showed his potential by defeating Jonatan Christie to reach the All England Open quarterfinals, where he lost to Li Shi Feng.

As he enters the Badminton Asia Championships 2025, Lakshya will be looking to overcome tough challenges, including a potential rematch against Shi Yu Qi, who eliminated him in the first round of last year’s edition.

Here’s a breakdown of Lakshya Sen‘s projected path to the Badminton Asia Championships final:

Round 1: vs. Lee Chia Hao (TPE)

Lakshya Sen begins his campaign against Taiwan’s Lee Chia Hao, who recently made headlines by reaching the final of the All England Open 2025. This was one of the biggest achievements of his career, as he defeated several higher-ranked opponents along the way.

Lee has also won multiple BWF International Challenge and Series titles, steadily improving his ranking over the years but Lakshya would be the slight favourite.

Round 2: vs. Loh Kean Yew (SGP)

If Lakshya advances, he could face former world champion, Loh Kean Yew, provided Loh overcomes Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo in the first round. Loh’s biggest career highlight is winning the 2021 BWF World Championships, making him Singapore’s first-ever world champion in badminton. He has also reached multiple BWF World Tour finals, including a Thailand Masters 2019 title where he defeated Lin Dan in the finals.

Quarterfinal: vs. Shi Yu Qi (CHN)

A major hurdle awaits Lakshya in the form of Shi Yu Qi, a two-time All England champion in 2018 and 2025 and Asian Championships silver medallist in 2019. Shi also won the BWF World Tour Finals 2018 and 2024, proving his consistency at the highest level. Notably, Shi defeated Lakshya in the first round of the Badminton Asia Championships 2024, making this potential rematch even more crucial for the Indian star.

Semifinal: Kunlavut Vitidsarn (THA), Weng Hong Yang (CHN), or Chou Tien Chen (TPE)

If Lakshya makes it to the semifinals, he could face:

  • Kunlavut Vitidsarn, the 2023 World Champion, also won silver at the 2022 World Championships and has claimed multiple BWF Super 500 and Super 300 titles.
  • Weng Hong Yang, the 2024 China Open champion, has steadily climbed the rankings with strong performances in recent BWF Tour events. He recently won the 2025 Swiss Open.
  • Chou Tien Chen, a former All England finalist in 2020 and Asian Games silver medallist in 2018. He also has seven BWF World Tour titles, including a Super 1000 victory at the 2019 Indonesia Open.

Lakshya has defeated every player mentioned above and thus has good chances if he reaches the semifinals.

Final: Li Shi Feng (CHN) or Jonatan Christie (INA)

The bottom half of the draw features top contenders Li Shi Feng and Jonatan Christie, both strong favorites to reach the final.

  • Li Shi Feng, the 2023 All England Open champion, also won the 2023 US Open and the 2024 Japan Masters, proving his consistency on the big stage.
  • Jonatan Christie, a 2018 Asian Games gold medallist, 2024 Badminton Asia Championships winner, and All England winner in 2024, making him one of Indonesia’s most successful singles players in recent years.

Lakshya Sen has a challenging road ahead, facing top-tier opponents with impressive achievements. However, if he can regain his best form, he has the potential to make a deep run at the Badminton Asia Championships 2025 and possibly secure his first major continental title.
