Lakshya Sen's projected path to BWF World Championships 2025 final

Lakshya Sen will face top seed Shi Yuqi in his first round match.
Lakshya Sen is one of India’s brightest badminton talents and a rising force in men’s singles. He became the first Indian to reach the Paris 2024 Olympics badminton men’s singles semi-finals; however, he missed out on a medal after losing to Lee Zii Jia in the bronze medal match.
The 23-year-old is a bronze medalist at the World Championships, a gold medalist at the Thomas Cup, a silver medalist at the Asian Games, and a gold and silver medalist at the Commonwealth Games.
Throughout his career, Sen has consistently challenged the world’s top players and won titles such as the Canada Open and the Syed Modi International.
Currently ranked World No. 17, he showed his consistency on the biggest stages, winning a bronze medal at the 2021 World Championships to prove he knows how to rise to the top at the sport’s major events.
That said, here’s a look at Lakshya Sen’s projected path to the BWF World Championships 2025 final based on the draw.
Lakshya Sen’s projected path
R64 – Shi Yu Qi
This draw has posed a big challenge for Lakshya as he will have to face the top seed in his very first match. Shi Yu Qi is in superb form, having recently won the All England Open and multiple World Tour titles.
For Lakshya to progress, he will need one of the best performances of his career. Shi also leads the head-to-head 3-1 against Lakshya.
R32 – Julien Carraggi or Le Duc Phat
If Lakshya beats Shi, his next opponent will likely be the winner of Le Duc Phat (VIE) vs Julien Carraggi (BEL). Both are lower-ranked players, making Lakshya the favorite if he carries momentum from a first-round upset.
R16 – Christo Popov
In the pre-quarterfinals, Lakshya could face Christo Popov of France, a dangerous opponent with a strong attacking game. Popov has enjoyed a good run in Europe this season, but Lakshya’s experience on big stages could give him the edge.
Quarter-final – Alex Lanier or Weng Hong Yang
Alex Lanier, another French shuttler, or China’s Weng Hong Yang, can trouble Lakshya in the quarters. Lanier is one of the fastest-rising stars in world badminton, while Weng brings consistency and powerful strokes. Either way, this would be a tough battle for a medal spot.
Semi-final – Li Shi Feng or Lee Zii Jia
If Lakshya makes it to the last four, he will most likely meet Li Shi Feng of China or Malaysia’s star player Lee Zii Jia. Li, the 2023 All England champion, is known for his relentless pace, while Lee Zii Jia, who is playing his first since the All England Open in March, can be inconsistent but is a big-match player. Both scenarios will demand Lakshya’s best.
Final – Anders Antonsen or Kunlavut Vitidsarn
From the other half of the draw, the most probable finalists are Anders Antonsen from Denmark or the reigning world champion, Kunlavut Vitidsarn.
Both have been in excellent form on the World Tour. Antonsen, who is the number 2 seed, has an all-around game, while Kunlavut’s defensive solidity would make for a fierce challenge in the title match.
Who will Lakshya Sen face in his first-round match at the BWF World Championships 2025?
Lakshya Sen will take on World No. 1 Shi Yu Qi of China in his opening round, making it one of the toughest possible first matches.
What is Lakshya Sen’s head-to-head record against Li Shi Feng, his possible semifinal opponent?
Lakshya Sen leads Li Shi Feng 7-6 in their career meetings, though recent matches, including the China Open 2025, have been closely contested.
How has Lakshya Sen performed against Anders Antonsen and Kunlavut Vitidsarn, his potential final opponents?
Sen trails 2-5 against Denmark’s Anders Antonsen and 4-7 against reigning world champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand.
Why is Shi Yu Qi considered Lakshya Sen’s biggest challenge at the World Championships?
Shi Yu Qi recently beat Sen in straight games at the Badminton Asia Championships 2024 and leads their head-to-head 3-1, entering as the tournament favorite.
