Lakshya Sen becomes world no. 11 after his win at the BWF Australian Open 2025.
Lakshya Sen signed off his 2025 season in the best possible fashion, with the BWF Australian Open 2025 title after a commanding show in Sunday’s final.
Indian shuttler Lakshya Sen, who has been dramatically regaining his form in the past few months, outclassed his opponent, Yushi Tanaka of Japan, defeating him 21-15, 21-11 in the finals.
With this win, Lakshya became the 2nd Indian men’s singles shuttler and 3rd Indian overall to win the Australian Open title. Saina Nehwal (2014, 2016) and Kidambi Srikanth (2017) are the only other Indians to lift the trophy.
He also became only the 2nd Indian to win the BWF World Tour Title in 2025. He also ended his title drought, with his last title coming almost a year back in the Syed Modi 2024, and his last title outside India was in the Canada Open 2023.
The game started evenly with both players doing service exchanges, and soon after, Lakshya Sen upped his pace and started dictating the rally and forcing Tanaka to make errors. The Indian opened up a four-point gap and was leading 13-9.

It was looking like smooth sailing for Lakshya in the first game, but Yushi Tanaka soon made a comeback and made the score 14-13.
Lakshya, however, stayed composed and kept his calm, showing his experience at the crucial stage of the game, and went on to win the first game 21-15. His tight net play and a rock-solid defence, retrieving almost every shuttle, forced Tanaka to make errors.
In the second game, Lakshya completely crushes Yushi Tanaka, as he didn’t give even a single chance for Tanaka to make a comeback. Lakshya won the 2nd game and the match 21-11.
While the first game saw Lakshya dictating the rally and forcing Tanaka to make an error, the second game also had a similar pattern, but with more winners coming from Lakshya’s racquet this time.
Just a day earlier, Lakshya scripted one of the great comebacks of the season, saving three match points to defeat Chou Tien Chen 17–21, 24–22, 21–16 in an intense 86-minute contest.
With this win, Lakshya signed off on one of his seasons at the BWF World Tour Finals. After managing just one quarter-final in his first 10 tournaments, he turned his season around with an impressive run in his last 10 events, producing six quarter-finals, two semi-finals, one final, and one title thanks to his triumph in Sydney.
Lakshya Sen’s end-of-season surge helped him reach world no. 11 in the BWF World Rankings following his Australian Open triumph.
Lakshya, who has not given his name in Syed Modi, will now end his season and will be seen in action at the World Tour in the next year’s Malaysia Open. Fans will be expecting a similar form for Lakshya next year as well.
