Four of the five Indian shuttlers in women’s singles were knocked out in the opening round of Macau Open 2025.

Lakshya Sen, Ayush Shetty and Tharun Mannepalli joined Satwik-Chirag in the second round of Macau Open 2025 but it was curtains for HS Prannoy in the opening round itself on Wednesday.

Mixed doubles pair Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto, seeded fifth in the tournament, also progressed into the next round with dominant win. In women’s singles, four of the five young shuttlers bowed out, with Rakshitha Santhosh producing a remarkable turnaround to upset Pornpicha Choeikeewong.

Lakshya Sen made light work of Korea’s Jeon Hyeok, cruising into the Round of 16 with a 21-8, 21-14 victory. The Commonwealth Games gold medallist will now face Indonesia’s Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo.

Ayush Shetty also played smart and easy, beating Huang Yu Kai of Chinese Taipei 21-10, 21-11. The 20-year-old will meet Malaysia’s Justin Hoh next.

In an all-Indian clash, Tharun Mannepalli defeated Manraj Singh 21-19, 21-13 to book a spot in the round of 16, where he’ll take on Hong Kong’s Lee Cheuk Yiu.

Meanwhile, there was heartbreak for HS Prannoy, who started strong by winning the first game 21-18 but couldn’t hold on, losing the next two 15-21, 16-21 to Indonesia’s Yohanes Saut Marcellyno. Kiran George, too, crashed out early, going down 15-21, 10-21 to Hong Kong’s Angus Ng Ka Long.

In the mixed doubles event, the fifth seeds Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto dominated their Thai opponents Ratchapol Makkasasithorn and Nattamon Laisuan, winning 21-10, 21-15 in just 26 minutes.

India’s rising star Unnati Hooda had a tough outing. She won the first game against Denmark’s Julie Dawall Jakobsen 21-16 but lost the next two in a close battle, 19-21, 17-21.
