India had mixed results on the opening day of the BWF Macau Open 2025, but the men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, fresh off their return to the world’s top 10, continued their strong form by storming into the second round on Tuesday.

World No. 9 Satwik-Chirag defeated Malaysia’s Low Hang Yee and Ng Eng Cheong 21-13, 21-15 at the Macao East Asian Games Dome in Macau, China. The Indian pair will now face the Japanese duo Kakeru Kumagai and Hiroki Nishi in round of 16.

In women’s doubles, the Indian pair Priya Konjengbam and Shruti Mishra battled through a tough three-game encounter to defeat Chinese Taipei’s Zih Ling Huang and Wang Szu-Min 21-15, 16-21, 21-17. Emerging victorious in the match that lasted one hour and nine minutes, Priya-Shruti booked their place in the round of 16.

However, the day wasn’t without setbacks. Indian pair Apoorva Gahlawat and Sakshi Gahlawat fell to Malaysia’s Go Pei Kee and Teoh Mei Xing in straight games in their women’s doubles round of 32 match.

The biggest upset of the day came when the Commonwealth Games bronze medallists and top seeds Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand were defeated by the unseeded Chinese Taipei pair of Lin Xiao-Min and Peng Yu-Wei, with score of 16-21, 22-20, 21-15.

In the singles qualifiers, Anmol Kharb registered a solid win, defeating Azerbaijan’s Keisha Fatimah Azzahra 21-11, 21-13. Tasnim Mir also qualified with 21-14, 13-21, 21-17 victory over Thailand’s Tidapron Kleebyeesun.

India’s men’s singles contingent in the qualifiers included Saneeth Dayanand, Siddhanth Gupta, Alap Mishra, Kavin Thangam Kavin, and Meiraba Maisnam. Unfortunately, all five fell short and were unable to make it to the main draw.

However, there was success in the doubles qualifiers, as the duo of Dingku Singh Konthoujam and Amaan Mohammad, along with the mixed doubles pair Thandrangini Hema Nagendra Babu and Priya Konjengbam won their respetcive matches.

India’s top singles players including Lakshya Sen, Ayush Shetty, and HS Prannoy, will begin their campaigns in the main draw on Wednesday.
