It was a good day for the Indian contingent at the event.
Former world champion and two-time Olympic medalist, P.V. Sindhu continued her impressive run at the Madrid Spain Masters 2024, advancing to the quarter-finals with a straight-games win over Taiwan’s Huang Yu-Hsun on Thursday.
After easily defeating Wen Yu Zhang from Canada, P.V. Sindhu took down Taiwan’s Huang Yu Hsun in the Round of 16 at the Spain Masters.
Huang led by 11-10 before the break in the first game. However, after the short interval, Sindhu took control and won nine straight points to clinch the first game 21-14. She also dominated the second game, as she won it comfortably with a margin of nine points (21-12) and took only 36 minutes to seal the match.
Her performance during this tournament is essential as it will help build her confidence ahead of next month’s Badminton Asia Championships. Supanida Katethong who is ranked 17th in the world is set to face P.V. Sindhu in the quarter-finals.
In the men’s doubles, Arjun M.R. and Dhruv Kapila sealed a straight-games win over the Scottish pair of Christopher and Matthew Grimley, 21-17, 21-19 in 37 minutes.
However, in some disappointment, Krishna Prasad Garaga and Sai Pratheek K. bowed out of the competition after putting up a spirited fight against the Popov brothers Christo and Toma Junior, who beat them two games to one with scores of 21-16, 15-21, 21-16 in about 56 minutes.
