Satwik-Chirag, HS Prannoy and PV Sindhu are mathematically assured of qualification for Paris Olympics 2024.

With the Paris Olympics 2024 fast approaching, athletes—including badminton shuttlers—have been busy trying to book their spot in the biggest stage of sporting events. The badminton qualification process spans from May 1, 2023, to April 28, 2024. Once this period ends, the comprehensive list of qualified players will be unveiled on April 30.

The qualification criteria are decided based on the ‘Race to Paris Rankings List’, which factors in the top 10 event results. Those ranked within the top 16 of this list automatically secure a quota place. However, national federations face limitations if more than two players from the same federation are ranked within the top 16, necessitating a strategic selection process.

In doubles competitions, a similar protocol applies, with a maximum of two pairs permitted if they rank within the top eight of the ‘Race to Paris rankings list’.

Note: PV Sindhu (13), HS Prannoy (9) and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy & Chirag Shetty (2) are inside the top 16 of the “Race to Paris Rankings List” and have mathematically booked their place for Paris. Lakshya Sen (12) is also within the top 16 of the list but will need few more points to be mathematically guaranteed of qualification.

Now, let’s delve into the Indian shuttlers who are still in the race to qualify for Paris Olympics 2024, assessing their performance and potential on the court, after the All England Open 2024 tournament.

Lakshya Sen

After eight consecutive round of 32 loses in the BWF World Tour, Lakshya Sen is finally back in form. A good run at Badminton Asia Team Championships followed by two back-to-back semi-final finishes at the French Open and All England Open 2024 has brought him back into the qualification race and very well.

After the All England Open Championships, Sen has jumped to 12th position with 64021 points. He has so far:

  • Won the Canada Open
  • Reached the semifinals of five tournaments (Thailand Open, US Open and Japan Open, French Open, All England Open)

Ashwini Ponnappa/Tanisha Crasto

Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto, considerably a newly formed badminton pair, are making waves on the court. Their rapid ascent to the top 20 of the BWF World rankings has propelled them to becoming India’s new number one in women’s doubles, overtaking Tressa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, who have been grappling injuries.

Following their impressive performance at the All England Open Championships, Ashwini and Tanisha surged to the 20th position in the ‘Race to Paris Rankings List’ with 51,010 points, striding their way to secure the Paris 2024 qualification. In the qualification race, they have:

  • Won three tournaments (Nantes International Challenge, Abu Dhabi Masters, Guhawati Masters)
  • Finished as runner-up in two tournaments (Syed Modi and Odisha Masters)

Treesa Jolly/Gayatri Gopichand Pullela

After staying unbeaten at Badminton Asia Team Championships, where they defeated pairs like Nami Matsuyama/Chiharu Shida and Jongkolphan Kititharakul/Rawinda Prajongjai, they were expected to go on a run. But Treesa-Gayatri have produced below average results in the tournament that followed.

At the All England Open, where they have reached the semifinals in both the previous editions, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand were knocked out from the opening round. Still, it’s not yet over for India’s No. 2 women’s doubles pair. They need to overtake Ashwini-Tanisha in the last three tournaments to secure a berth for Paris Olympics. The pair currently stand in the 26th position with 44,714 points.

  • Unbeaten at Badminton Asia Team Championships
  • Reached quarterfinals in Syed Modi, Thailand Masters and German Open
