Mady Sow, a young shuttler from France, has made history by becoming the youngest-ever men’s singles champion at the European Junior Badminton Championships.
Lifting the trophy at just 16 years and 235 days old, Sow enters the record books of a tournament that’s been running for three decades now.
He defeated Mario Rodriguez of Spain in straight games [21-7, 21-7] to lift the men’s singles title at the Tatabánya Multifunctional Sport Hall in Hungary.
It’s the 30th edition of the event, organised jointly by Badminton Europe and the Hungarian Badminton Association and brought together the best under-19 talent the continent has to offer across both team and individual competitions.
What made Sow’s run to the title particularly special was how comfortably he did it. He didn’t lose a single game through the entire individual event, going a perfect seven matches and twelve games unbeaten.
In the final, he made light work of Spain’s Mario Rodriguez, closing it out 21-7, 21-7. His toughest outing arguably came in the semi-final, where he had to fight past Arthur Tatranov 22-20, 21-11 before cruising through the summit clash.

Sow’s win hasn’t come out of nowhere either. If we look back at his 2026 season, he’s been putting in the work on the junior international circuit and has competed in tournaments across Estonia, the Netherlands, Germany, Finland and Luxembourg.
Fans have already taken notice online, with many pointing out that France seems to be developing a real knack for producing men’s singles talent lately, a discipline the country hasn’t always been known for on the international stage.
Whether Sow can carry this momentum forward remains to be seen, but for now, the young Frenchman has given his country plenty to be excited about.
