Malaysia Masters 2024: PV Sindhu defeats top seed Han Yue to reach semifinals

This was PV Sindhu’s 452nd win in women’s singles.
India’s PV Sindhu made it to the semifinals of the Malaysia Masters 2024 tournament on Friday. She beat China’s top seed Han Yue in the quarterfinals.
Sindhu won 21-13, 14-21, 21-12 in a match that lasted one hour. It was a back-and-forth contest against the world number #6 Han. Ranked 15th in the world, Sindhu, took the first game before Han forced a decider by winning the second. Sindhu regained control in the third game.
She then went up 11-5 at the interval in the opening game. Han cut the lead to three points, but Sindhu pulled away to win it 21-13.
The roles reversed in the second game. Han opened up a big 11-3 lead at the break and went on to take it 21-14 to force a third game.
Sindhu raced ahead 11-3 in the decider and extended the lead to 16-4. Han tried to rally but Sindhu had enough of a cushion to close out the 55-minute match.

Sindhu, who took a break after the European events in March to prepare for the Olympics, looked sharp on her return. She will try to go all the way in this big tournament. Sindhu will face Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan in the semifinals. Ongbamrungphan defeated Putri Kusuma Wardani 21-12, 21-23, 21-16 in the quarterfinals.
Sindhu and Busanan Ongbamrungphan have faced off each other 17 times, with PV Sindhu dominating the Thai player 16 times.
In other action, India’s Ashmita Chaliha lost 10-21, 15-21 to sixth seed Zhang Yi Man of China in 30 minutes. Chaliha had upset third seed Beiwen Zhang in the previous round.
Earlier on Thursday, Kiran George, the lone Indian in men’s singles, made an early exit from the Malaysia Masters after a second-round loss. The women’s doubles pairs of Treesa Jolly-Gayatri Gopichand, Simran Singhi-Ritika Thaker, and the mixed doubles duo of B Sumeeth Reddy-Sikki Reddy also bowed out in the second round. Krishna Prasad Garag and Sai Pratheek K led India’s men’s doubles campaign which ended on Thursday.
