The stage is set for the Malaysia Masters 2024, one of the premier events on the HSBC BWF World Tour Super 500 circuit. The tournament will take place from May 21-26 at the Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur.

The Malaysia Masters has been a launching pad for many badminton stars over the years. Olympic medalist PV Sindhu of India won the women’s singles titles in 2016 and 2019. World No. 9 HS Prannoy of India and the late Malaysian great Lee Chong Wei are among the other notable champions.

Last year, Prannoy made history by becoming the first Indian male player to win the Malaysia Masters men’s singles title. Sindhu has been a two-time women’s singles winner, while fellow Indian Saina Nehwal captured the title in 2017 Indian stars Lakshya Sen, Kidambi Srikanth, and have withdrawn from the tournament.

However, the tournament will have the presence of PV Sindhu, who has missed out on Uber Cup and Thailand Open.

However, one of the biggest storylines will be the home nation’s Lee Zii Jia. The 25-year-old Malaysian is riding high after his Thailand Open victory over Ng Ka Long Angus of Hong Kong on May 19. Lee opens against China’s Zhao Junpeng, with a potential quarterfinal clash against second seed Anders Antonsen of Denmark looming.

The Malaysia Masters dates back to 2009 when it began as a Grand Prix Gold event before being upgraded to a Super 500 tournament on the BWF World Tour in 2018.
