Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei sealed Malaysia’s second title in the BWF World Championships history.

Hari Merdeka, Malaysia’s National Day celebrated on August 31, found a special echo in Paris this year, not with fireworks, but with a shuttle and racket at the BWF World Championships 2025.

On Sunday, the nation witnessed history as Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei became Malaysia’s first-ever World Champions in the mixed doubles event. Their victory also secured just the second gold medal Malaysia have ever won at the tournament.

“Overwhelmed, because if you get it, you are a world champion,” Chen told BWF after the match. “This means a lot to us because it’s Merdeka Day.”

Chen and Toh had already scripted history by overpowering the French favourites Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue 21-18, 21-16 in the semi-finals. They became the first Malaysian mixed doubles team ever to secure a spot in the Worlds final.

Meanwhile, it wasn’t just mixed doubles that gave Malaysia something to cheer about. Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan also made history by becoming the first Malaysian women’s doubles pair to reach a World Championships final.

However, despite the strong fight, they fell 14-21, 22-20, 17-21 to China’s top-seeded Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning losing the dream of gold.

Still, their semi-final win over Japan’s Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida (14-21, 21-13, 21-12) secured Malaysia’s first-ever silver medal in the category.

Malaysia’s medals at BWF World Championships

Malaysia’s journey at the World Championships has often been one of heartbreak. The country had to wait until 2022 to celebrate its first gold, when Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik finally broke through in men’s doubles.

Before that, the story was full of near-misses. Lee Chong Wei, Malaysia’s badminton legend, finished as runner-up four times in men’s singles in 2011, 2013, and 2015, while his 2014 silver was later annulled due to a doping case.

In mixed doubles, the best result before this year was a bronze back in 2006 by Koo Kien Keat and Wong Pei Tty.

In Paris this year, the singles players from Malaysian contingent bowed out early. However, in the men’s doubles, two pairs made it to the quarter-finals but couldn’t go further.

The former champions Chia and Soh lost to India’s top Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty 21-12, 21-19. Meanwhile, seventh seeds Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun fought hard but went down to South Korea’s Kim Won Ho and Seo Seung Jae in a three-game battle, 21-23, 23-21, 15-21 in the quarters.
