These players were in sensational form throughout the tournament.

The YONEX Swiss Open 2021 was a great success. The tournament took place in Basel under immense care and precautions amid the pandemic. The performances by the shuttlers kept the online viewers well entertained.

Top-level players took part in the tournament in singles and doubles categories and produced some breathtaking badminton action. There were many individual performances from players that were part of the highlights from the tournament.

Here are the top five performers from the Swiss Open that concluded recently:

5. Pearly Tan & Thinaah Muralitharan

Malaysian pair of Pearly Tan & Thinaah Muralitharan were unstoppable in the Women’s Double bracket. The duo won the tournament in their category with relative ease. Their cohesion and teamwork was unmatched, as the pair lost only one single game on their way to the title.

Their final clash was against the pair of Gabriela Stoeva and Stefani Stoeva of Bulgaria. The final contest was dominated by the Malaysians, who clinched the victory through a 21-19, 21-12 scoreline.

4. Kunlavut Vitidsarn

The young shuttler surprised everyone with his performance.

World No.22 Kunlavut Vitidsarn was one of the surprise packages in the Men’s Singles action. The Thai shuttler reached the final after some brilliant performances. He did not lose a single game on the road to the final and also defeated the much higher-ranked Lee Zii Jia of Malaysia in the semi-finals of the tournament.

Despite losing the fight for the crown comprehensively to Viktor Axelsen, Kunlavut acclaimed a lot of praise from the fans and showed a lot of promise.

3. P.V. Sindhu

The reigning World Champion and the only Indian shuttler to make it to the finals of any bracket in the Swiss Open 2021, P.V. Sindhu showed glimpses of her lost form. The World No. 7 reached the final without losing a single game as well.

However, the 25-year-old could not stand up to the fiery Carolina Marin, who secured the title after decimating the Indian in straight games. After a rough start to the year, SIndhu must take away a lot of positives from her display in the tournament.

2. Viktor Axelsen

Axelsen was fluent throughout the tournament.

Viktor Axelsen secured the Men’s SIngles title after triumphing against Kunlavut Vitidsarn in the final. The World No. 2 dominated the proceedings and defeated his Thai competitor by a scoreline of 21-16, 21-6 within 47 minutes.

The Danish shuttler secured the crown without losing a single game throughout the tournament and also made short work of Kidambi Srikanth of India in the semi-finals.

1. Carolina Marin

The Women’s Singles bracket was won by Carolina Marin. The Spaniard carried her fiery form into the tournament and secured the title with ease, after defeating India’s P.V. Sindhu in straight games. The final was won by the reigning Olympic champion by 21-12, 21-5, a tie that lasted merely 35 minutes.

This was Marin’s third major title victory, after winning two tournaments in Thailand earlier this year. Considering her current form and the manner of the victory, stopping Carolina Marin could be a headache for her competitors.
