(Watch) China's Liu Yuchen proposes girlfriend Huang Yaqiong after her Paris Olympics 2024 gold triumph

Huang Yaqiong is a three-time world champion.

In a sweet moment at the Paris Olympics 2024, Chinese mixed doubles champion Huang Yaqiong experienced a double delight that she will never forget. She was proposed to by her boyfriend, Liu Yuchen, seconds after clinching the gold medal at the Paris Olympics with her partner, Zheng Siwei.

Paired up with Zheng Siwei, Yaqiong won the mixed doubles gold in badminton at the 2024 Paris Olympics, trouncing South Korea’s Kim Won-ho-Jeong Na-eun, 21-8, 21-11. After Yaqiong had received her medal on the podium, another Chinese badminton player, Liu Yuchen, still had a surprise.

Yuchen, who clinched the silver medal in men’s doubles competition at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and competed in men’s doubles again during these Paris Games, pulled out a ring, got down on one knee and proposed.

He already had flowers in his hands from the medal ceremony and Yaqiong began to speak and quickly replied, ‘yes.’ The proposal was played on the video screen at Porte de la Chapelle Arena in Paris and the crowd cheered along with the couple.

With his heart on his sleeve, Liu declared, “I’ll love you forever! Will you marry me?” Huang, thrilled to the surprise, replied, “Yes! I do!” and was showered with a lot of applause as Liu slid the ring onto her finger and they embraced, basking in their shared happiness.

“For me, the proposal is very surprising because I have been preparing for the game,” Huang said through an interpreter. “Today I am an Olympic champion and I got proposed, so that’s something I didn’t expect.”

“It made me cry again. While winning the championship, I also took a step forward in another stage of my life. This summer couldn’t be more perfect. Now, I am so happy that I am at a loss for words,” Huang Yaqiong said in her post-match interview. 

This isn’t the first engagement associated with these Olympics. The official website of the Paris Olympics commented that Argentina’s men’s handball player, Pablo Simonet, in the Olympic Village just before the competition began, on August 8, set the tone by proposing to Argentina’s women’s field hockey player, Maria Campoy.
