PV Sindhu ropes in Anup Sridhar as new coach

India’s star shuttler, PV Sindhu has hired former Olympian Anup Sridhar. as her new coach for the upcoming European swing in the BWF World Tour. The inclusion of the former men’s badminton player is set to boost Sindhu’s form in the BWF tour. Sridhar will be looking to improve Sindhu’s performance in the upcoming months. The duo has already targeted a podium finish in Asian Games 2026 which will be held in Japan.

Sindhu will have Sridhar’s expertise and experience on her side when she steps on the court next time. She had last competed in Paris Olympics 2024, where she lost to He Bing Jiao in straight games in the fourth round. While the BWF season is still not over, fans can expect the 29-year-old to record an inspirational comeback with the guidance of her new coach.

Sridhar will be Sindhu’s eighth coach and the third Indian to coach the shuttler. She had earlier trained under Indonesian coach Agus Dwi Santoso whose tenure will be coming to an end soon. The legendary shuttler had joined Sindhu’s team in January 2024 and had earlier coached Kidambi Srikanth and B Sai Praneeth  during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Who is PV Sindhu’s new coach, Anup Sridhar?

Anup Sridhar is a former Indian shuttler who was ranked as high as world No. #37 in 2010 in men’s singles. He had last competed on the BF tour in 2015 during the Sydney International, losing in the fourth round in straight games to Nguyen Tien Minh. Sridhar had won the Czech International Open in 2013 and the Victorian Open in 2012.

Sridhar’s notable wins came in 2007 during the BWF World Championships. He defeated Taufik Hidayat in an hour and 13 minutes in the third round. In the fourth round, he overcame Muhammad Hafiz Hashim who went on to coach Sindhu in 2023. In the quarterfinals, the Indian shuttler lost to Lin Dan.

Sridhar has not only established his legacy as a player but has now become a renowned coach. He started the Anup Sridhar Badminton Academy in 2018 and has been bringing up new talents alongside former shuttler Vijay Lancy.

The 41-year-old will now hope to script history while coaching PV Sindhu. He will also hope to be Sindhu’s permanent coach as promising results will ensure his stay being extended. Sridhar will now travel with Sindhu during the Artic Open and Denmark Open. Her performances in the European swing will determine if the duo will continue their partnership.
