The 20-year-old clinched a historic silver medal in men’s singles category.

With a gallant victory over Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn in the semi-finals, Ayush Shetty scripted history by reaching the Badminton Asia Championships 2026 final.

The 20-year-old suffered a disappointing loss in the final against China’s Shi Yuqi; however, his performance in the continental competition was enough to put him on a list of badminton greats who have represented India.

Shetty, who recently won the US Open Super 300, enjoyed a stellar run at the Badminton Asia Championships. He did not lose a game at the continental meet until the quarter-finals, beating former World No. 3 Li Shifeng, 2023 Syed Modi International champion Chi Yu-jen, and third seed Jonatan Christie in straight games.

Later, Ayush Shetty stunned defending champion and Paris Olympics 2024 silver medallist Kunlavut Vitidsarn. With such performances, Shetty has somehow developed an image as a big-game player, a giant killer. Here is the list of records Ayush set at the Badminton Asia Championships 2026.

First Indian men’s singles finalist in 68 years

Since Dinesh Khanna’s astounding performance in the 1965 games, Ayush Shetty has become the first Indian shuttler to play in the tournament final.

After 68 long years, the 20-year-old became the first Indian shuttler in an individual event to secure a finish above bronze. Additionally, he’s only the second badminton player in Indian history to reach the final in an individual event.

Before the Badminton Asia Championships 2026 campaign, India had seven medals in the tournament’s history, one gold and six bronze. Nevertheless, Ayush has increased the court’s standing by winning India’s first silver medal in the men’s singles event at the continental meet.

In 2018, after 11 years since the last time an Indian shuttler won a medal at the Badminton Asia Championships (Anup Sridhar in 2007), HS Prannoy finally secured a bronze medal. Prannoy defeated Kantaphon Wangcharoen, Wang Tzu-wei, and the second seed Son Wan-ho before losing to Chen Long in the last four.

However, Ayush Shetty made sure the wait wouldn’t be as long this time. Thus, the 20-year-old has become the first Indian men’s singles shuttler in eight years to secure a medal at the championships.

Seventh Indian male shuttler to reach the last four

Ayush Shetty has joined the ranks of Indian badminton icons such as Dinesh Khanna, Suresh Goel, Prakash Padukone, Pullela Gopichand, Anup Sridhar, and HS Prannoy by reaching the semi-finals of the Badminton Asia Championships 2026 in the men’s singles event.

Only Dinesh Khanna has won two medals in the competition, a gold and a bronze. Except for the 1965 champion, all five players have won a bronze medal at the championships.

Youngest Indian male shuttler to win a medal at the championships

At the age of 20, Ayush Shetty has become the youngest male Indian shuttler to win a medal at the Badminton Asia Championships. Earlier, the record was held by Prakash Padukone, who won bronze at the men’s singles event in November 1976 at the age of 21.
