Saina Nehwal announced their separation on her Instagram story.

India’s star badminton player Saina Nehwal and her husband Parupalli Kashyap have decided to separate after almost seven years of marriage. Saina, a former World No.1 announced on Sunday (July 13) via an Instagram story from her official account.

Nehwal and Kashyap got married on December 14, 2018, in a private ceremony after knowing each other for a long time, starting from their early years at the Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy in Hyderabad.

“Life takes us in different directions sometimes. After much thought and consideration, Kashyap Parupalli and I have decided to part ways,” Saina wrote on her Instagram story.

“We’re choosing peace, growth, and healing-for ourselves and each other. I’m grateful for the memories and wish nothing but the best moving forward. Thank you for understanding and respecting our privacy during this time,” the statement added. Kashyap is yet to release a formal announcement on the same.

Nehwal, who is the only Indian female shuttler and one of only two Indians to be ranked World No. 1 in badminton, has been a trailblazer in the sport. She has achieved several feats in his career, including a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics.

Additionally, Nehwal also has five medals at the Commonwealth Games (three gold, one silver, and one bronze) and clinched two bronze medals at the Asian Games in 2014 and 2018.

Her CWG gold medals came in 2010 Delhi (Women’s Singles) and 2018 Gold Coast (Women’s Singles & Mixed Team). Saina won a silver medal in the mixed team event at the 2010 New Delhi CWG and a bronze medal at the 2006 Melbourne edition.

She has won medals for India at various other events, including the BWF World Championships, Uber Cup, Asian Championships, and many more.

Kashyap, on the other hand, holds the record of being the first Indian male player to reach the quarter-final round in men’s singles at the Olympic Games. He achieved the record at 2012 London Olympics.

Kashyap, a former World No. 6, won three medals for India at the Commonwealth Games and was a consistent performer for the nation during his peak. His best performance was the gold medal in men’s singles at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. He also won a silver and bronze medal in the 2010 CWG hosted in New Delhi.
