Why has Satwik-Chirag withdrawn from BWF Indonesia Open 2026?

India’s star men’s doubles pair, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, have withdrawn from the BWF Indonesia Open 2026 after Satwik suffered a shoulder injury during their opening-round match in Jakarta.
The world No. 4 duo were facing Malaysia’s Aaron Tai and Kang Khai Xing in the first round of the Super 1000 tournament when the match was cut short. Satwik appeared to be struggling with discomfort in his right shoulder, and the Indian pair decided to retire while trailing 6-11 in the opening game.
Soon after the match, the Badminton Association of India (BAI) confirmed that Satwik’s injury was the reason behind the withdrawal. The federation stated that the pair will now shift their focus towards recovery and rehabilitation before returning to competition.

The setback comes at an unfortunate time for the Indian duo, who had entered the Indonesia Open with strong momentum. Just a few days earlier, Satwik and Chirag ended their long wait for a BWF World Tour title by winning the Singapore Open 2026. They produced an impressive comeback in the final against Indonesia’s Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri, recovering from a game down to secure the title.
The Singapore Open triumph was particularly significant as it marked their first World Tour title in nearly two years and further strengthened their position among the world’s elite men’s doubles pairs.
However, the demanding international badminton calendar often leaves players with little time to recover between tournaments. Satwik has also dealt with shoulder issues earlier in the season, making it essential for the pair to prioritise fitness ahead of several major events scheduled later this year.
With the World Championships and other important tournaments on the horizon, the decision to withdraw appears to be a precautionary measure aimed at avoiding a more serious setback.
That being said, while Satwik and Chirag’s exit is a major blow to India’s men’s doubles campaign in Jakarta, fans will be hoping the injury is not severe and that the pair can return to action soon.
