Tournament history of BWF World Junior Mixed Team Championships

The mixed team format made its debut in 2000. China emerged as the winner of the inaugural edition, defeating South Korea in the finals.

So far, only four nations have won the Suhandinata Cup. China are the most successful nation at the championships, winning a record 14 titles. South Korea (3), Indonesia (2) and Malaysia (1) are the other nations to win the title. South Korea’s first title came in 2006, defeating China in the finals.

That 2006 batch saw the rise of legends like Lee Yong-dae and Son Wan-ho, who went on to become key players for South Korea.

Malaysia won their first title way back in 2011, defeating South Korea in the finals. Indonesia first won their title in 2019, defeating China in the finals. Indonesia are also the defending champions and will be looking to defend their title

India’s best performance was in the 2008 edition at home when they finished a heartbreaking fourth, losing to Chinese Taipei in the bronze medal match. Now, after 17 years, India will get a chance to script history at home. In the 2024 edition, India lost to Indonesia in the quarter-finals (92-110).

Format and groups for BWF World Junior Championships 2025

The 36 teams are divided into 8 groups, with four teams in four groups and five teams in four groups. Teams will play each other once, and the top teams from each group will qualify for the quarter-finals.

There will be no third-fourth place playoff match, and both losing semi-finalists will receive the bronze medal. The other teams will play classification matches to determine final positions.

Unlike the previous edition, where the format was an 110-relay system, a new relay format is being adopted this year at the Junior World Championships. It will be a 45-point best-of-3 set. A team winning two sets of 45 points will win the match.

Teams will play a total of 5 matches in each set (BS, GS, BD, GD, XD) and the team that reaches the 45 points first will win the set.

Discipline in each set will change after every multiple of 9 points. If a set reaches 44 points each, then the team that wins the next point will win the set.
