Shi Yuqi is currently ranked world No #1 in men’s singles on the BWF tour.
The Chinese National team championships saw Shi Yuqi in a mid-game retirement and subsequent hospitalization. The Chinese shuttler was representing the Jiangsu team and was playing the third singles rubber. Yuqi was reportedly suffering from a fever during the match and had to be taken to the hospital in a stretcher.
Despite his well-known resilience, the fatigue and illness took a toll during the match. His condition became critical when he was unable to carry himself out of the court. Multiple reports suggest he collapsed during the match and was finding it hard to breathe.
Fans will be now waiting for an update from the top ranked shuttler as he will take time to recover after suffering a life threatening situation on the court. The world No #1 shuttler had previously played in the China Open at the end of September. He had lost in the round of 16 against Anthony Sinisuka Ginting and had since then had not made a comeback to the BWF tour.
Yuqi had played in Paris Olympics 2024 and exited in the quarter-finals of men’s singles. He lost to Kunlavut Vitidsarn in straight games. Yuqi had arrived in Paris after winning the Singapore and Indonesia Open. His 12-match winning streak came to an end at the hands of Vitidsarn in the last eight.

The next few days will be vital for Yuqi as he will be hoping to assure the fans about the improvement in his health. He had to retire mid-match due to a fever during the All England Open this year during the quarterfinals against Jonatan Christie. After 23 minutes into the match, Yuqi decided to end the battle early.
Shi Yuqi’s decline in form could be seen since the Paris Olympics. Yuqi had a formidable start to the 2024 season by reaching the finals of the Malaysia Open. He went on to win the India Open, French Open. Yuqi also reached the semi-finals of Badminton Asia Championships 2024.
But ever since competing in Paris, Yuqi has failed to reach the final in all three events he played in. He was handed a shocking defeat in the semi-finals of Korea Open by Alex Lanier of France. With only a handful of events left this season, Yuqi will be aiming to end the year with an inspiring comeback to the BWF tour.
