2012 was the last time China lifted both titles together in a single edition.
China reasserted its badminton supremacy on the world stage, claiming both the Thomas and Uber Cup 2024 titles with commanding performances against Indonesia in the finals held in Chengdu on Sunday.
In the Thomas Cup final, the Chinese men’s team defeated the 14-time champions Indonesia 3-1. World No. 2 Shi Yuqi set the tone, outclassing Anthony Sinisuka Ginting 21-17, 21-6 in the opening singles match. The duo of Liang Weikeng and Wang Chang then doubled China’s lead with a hard-fought 21-18, 17-21, 21-17 victory over Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto in the doubles.
Although Jonatan Christie temporarily revived Indonesia’s hopes with a 21-16, 15-21, 21-17 win over Li Shifeng, the Chinese pair of He Ji Ting and Ren Xiang Yu sealed the title with a clinical 21-11, 21-15 win in the second doubles match over Bagas Maulana/Mohammad Shohibul Fikri.

In the Uber Cup final, the Chinese women’s team whitewashed Indonesia 3-0 to reclaim the title they last won in 2020. Olympic champion Chen Yufei led the charge with a 21-7, 21-16 demolition of Gregoria Mariska Tunjung. The world’s top-ranked doubles pair of Chen Qing Chen and Jia Yifan then overwhelmed Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti and Ribka Sugiarto 21-11, 21-8.
He Bingjiao secured the decisive third win for China after battling past a tenacious Ester Nurumi 10-21, 21-15, 21-17.
The dual victories mark China’s undisputed position as the powerhouse of badminton, a status they have held for the better part of the last three decades. Indonesia, traditionally a formidable force, was denied a fairytale ending in their first Uber Cup final appearance since 2008.
