India are the defending champions in the Thomas Cup, while South Korea are reigning Uber Cup winners.

The biggest prize in team badminton is up for grabs this week as the Thomas and Uber Cup 2024 gets underway in Chengdu, China. Thirty-two of the world’s elite national squads have converged on the Sichuan capital, all eyeing the coveted Thomas Cup (men’s) and Uber Cup (women’s) trophies.

The Thomas Cup, contested for the 33rd time, sees defending champions India attempt to retain the crown they sensationally claimed in 2022. But home favourites China, with a staggering 10 titles, will be the team to beat. All eyes will be on Momota Kento of Japan too, with the former world no 1 set to bring the curtain down on his glittering international career following this event.

In the Uber Cup, Korea Republic are the reigning champions but will face a stern test from China’s all-conquering women’s team, who have lifted the trophy a remarkable 15 times. Expectations will be high on the hosts to secure a rare double triumph on home soil.

The format sees the 16 qualified teams per event split into four groups of four for the initial round-robin phase. The top two finishers per group then advance to the knockout quarterfinals, where ties become a best-of-five matches affair until the respective finals on May 5.
