Komang Ayu Cahya Dewi heroics lead Indonesia to its first Uber Cup final after 16 years.
Indonesia pulled off a massive upset, stunning defending champions South Korea 3-2 in the Thomas and Uber Cup 2024 semifinals in Chengdu, China. The Indonesian women’s team secured their first Uber Cup final appearance since 2008 thanks to a thrilling comeback victory by 21-year-old Komang Ayu Cahya Dewi in the decisive third singles match.
Dewi lost the opening game to Kim Min Sun but battled back to win 17-21, 21-16, 21-19, sealing Indonesia’s spot in tomorrow’s final against host nation China. Her gritty performance capped an impressive team effort as Indonesia capitalized on the absence of world no 1 An Se Young for South Korea.
Indonesia got off to a strong start as world no #9 Gregoria Mariska Tunjung swept past Sim Yu Jin 21-15, 21-13. South Korea’s formidable doubles pair of Baek Ha Na and Lee So Hee leveled the tie before Ester Nurumi Tri Wardoyo put Indonesia back ahead.
After South Korea forced a decider by taking the second doubles match, all eyes were on Dewi in the decisive third singles rubber. Her dramatic victory set off celebrations for the Indonesian contingent dreaming of their first Uber Cup title since 1996.
Indonesia will try to end that 28-year drought against powerhouse China, who cruised past Japan 3-0 in the other semifinal. China is aiming for its 16th Uber Cup crown after falling to South Korea in the 2022 final.
For the three-time champion Indonesians, it’s a long-awaited return to the biggest stage in women’s team badminton. Having participated in 26 Uber Cups with three titles, they have a golden opportunity to etch their name as they vie for the fourth title on May 5th.
