China is the most successful team in the competition.
The Uber Cup is the world women’s team championship in badminton. The idea for hosting the tournament was first proposed by Betty Uber after a tournament for men was held in 1949. She suggested that there should be a tournament for women similar to the men’s event in 1950.
In addition, she conducted the draw for the first edition of the tournament (1956-1957), which was held at Lytham St. Annes in Lancashire, England. This resulted in the Uber Cup being named after her.
A total of 16 Badminton World Federation (BWF) member nations compete at the tournament. Initially held at three-year intervals, the tournament’s format was changed to a biennial competition since the 1984 edition.
Let’s look at the top five nations with the most wins at the Uber Cup:
5. South Korea
South Korea is one of the most successful teams of the tournament with two titles and seven runners-up finishes.
They won the 2022 edition of the event, defeating powerhouse China by a close margin of 3-2. With this, South Korea won their second title in the tournament’s history, which they previously lifted in 2010 by ousting China.
4. United States
The United States was once a force to be reckoned with in the competition, securing titles in the first three editions (1957, 1960, 1963). Two of these victories came against Denmark, who settled for the runners-up position. The USA also enjoyed a second-place finish at the 1966 edition after losing to Japan 2-5.
However, their dominance disappeared with time, with their last top outing coming in 1978 in New Zealand, where they reached the semi-finals.
