Viktor Axelsen had retired during his fourth round match in BWF Denmark Open 2024.

Viktor Axelsen has provided the fans with an injury update on social media. The Danish shuttler had retired mid-match during his fourth round battle against Alex Lanier in Denmark Open 2024. Axelsen was seen throwing up into a towel after the end of the first game. His condition worsened and informed the referee that he could not play further.

As the fans were worried about Axelsen’s health, he clarified his condition on X. Axelsen said that his sickness had started after winning his opening round match in Denmark Open and it became severe during the second match.

He said,’ Once I started playing and my heart rate increased, I started to feel very uncomfortable, and there was nothing I could do to manage. This should hopefully be a minor virus, which I hope to recover from quickly.’

The two-time Olympic champion wished his opponent Lanier luck for the upcoming matches in the Denmark Open. Axelsen also thanked the fans for the support and was upset that he could not play like expected in front of the home crowd. He had won the title in 2021 while defeating top seed Kento Momota of Japan.

Ever since winning the gold in Paris Olympics 2024, Axelsen has competed in three events. He won the Hong Kong Open without dropping a game in the tournament. But in the China Open, the world no #2 lost in the opening round to Lei Lan Xi. Axelsen had earlier beaten the Chinese player in the final of Hong Kong Open.

After suffering a shocking defeat in China, Viktor Axelsen was supposed to make a strong return to the Denmark Open. But his comeback was halted midway and now he will hope to recover in time. His rankings has not been affected yet with a strong lead over third placed Jonatan Christie of Indonesia.

Axelsen has collected 93,790 points and is only behind Shi Yu Qi who has 99,315 points. With only six events left this season, the 30-year-old will hope to get fit and compete on the tour from next month. Axelsen will keep his sights on the China Masters as it is expected to start from November 19.
