Bronny James made NBA history on October 22. James became one half of the league’s first-ever father-son duo to play in the same game. The 19-year-old guard, drafted 55th overall by the Los Angeles Lakers, joined his legendary father LeBron James on the court against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Born on October 6, in Cleveland, Ohio, LeBron “Bronny” James Jr. has lived his entire life in the spotlight as the eldest son of NBA superstar LeBron James and Savannah Brinson. Yet, under this constant scrutiny on him, James has been able to carve his own identity as a Cager. His growing years were divided between Cleveland and Miami and his father’s moves in the NBA.

Here are some facts about the budding superstar and son of legend LeBron James.

Who is Bronny James?

Family Ties and Dynamics

Born into basketball royalty, Bronny comes from a very tight-knit family that has always harmonized in achieving balance between public attention with private life. He is one of three children for LeBron and Savannah James, who began dating during high school in Akron, Ohio. The couple welcomed Bronny when LeBron was just 19 and in his rookie NBA season.

His siblings include:

Bryce Maximus James (born 2007): Following in the family’s basketball tradition at Sierra Canyon School

Zhuri Nova James: The youngest of the James’ children, who is already popular through the social media use in creating her “All Things Zhuri” YouTube channel.

NBA All-Star Chris Paul is Bronny’s godfather; surely shows how powerful relationships are going across the basketball arena. The relationship between Bronny and Chris Paul stems from Paul’s long-standing friendship with LeBron, dating back to their early NBA years.

High School Career

At Sierra Canyon School in Los Angeles, Bronny steadily developed his skills over four years. His progression can be seen through his impressive stats:

  • Freshman Year: Averaged 4.1 points in 15 minutes per game
  • Junior Year: Improved to 8.8 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.8 assists
  • Senior Year: Breakthrough season with 14.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game

His final year in high school proved to be pretty hot, finishing off by being selected as one of the McDonald’s All-Americans. In the All-American game, he tied the event’s record by nailing five three-pointers.

Health Setback and Recovery

A heart-stopping turn of events nearly derailed Bronny’s basketball journey when he went into cardiac arrest while practicing with USC on July 24, 2023. This very shocking incident stunned the basketball world and put his career in jeopardy.

Doctors found a treatable congenital heart defect and successfully treated him; thus, it was only five months after the said incidence that he was given a clean bill of health and allowed to go back to basketball.

College Experience at USC

Although Bronny played only half a season due to his cardiac incident, what he showed at USC was certainly potential. He averaged 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 25 games with six starts for 19.3 minutes a night. The highlight of his college game would come against Oregon State, where he notched a career high of 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting.

Playing Style and Scouting Report

Standing at 6’3″, Bronny has developed into a versatile guard with specific strengths:

  • Elite perimeter defense and defensive anticipation
  • Strong catch-and-shoot abilities
  • High basketball IQ and court vision
  • Reliable ball-handling skills

NBA scouts have compared his style to established players like Jrue Holiday and De’Anthony Melton citing him more for his defensive intensity and basketball intelligence. While he continues to develop his scoring ability his understanding of the game coupled with his defensive aptitude makes him a great asset.

The NBA Dream

The James family’s NBA aspirations materialized when the Lakers selected Bronny with the 55th pick in the 2024 draft. Not surprisingly, there was a little controversy attached to the draft process in that it was reported that Bronny’s agent, Rich Paul, had informed several other teams that they would not want Bronny should they draft him.

And on his first day in uniform, Bronny James chose jersey number #9 in honour of rapper Juice WRLD and thus joined his father in the Lakers’ roster, a long-time wish of LeBron’s.

Beyond Basketball

Bronny’s influence extends well beyond the court. His social media presence is distinctive:

  • Gained over one million Instagram followers on his first day
  • Currently boasts more than seven million followers
  • Signed major NIL deals with Nike and Beats by Dre during high school
