World champion Germany joins France in Group B.
FIBA, the Basketball global organizing body recently held a draw for the Paris Olympics 2024, pitting the fields for the 12-team basketball tournaments. While the teams for the women’s competition are set, four spots remain open in the men’s bracket. These spots will be filled by the winners of qualifying tournaments that will take place in early July.
So far, eight teams have secured their spots for the men’s basketball event. The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has set up the groups for these teams and the ones that will join after qualifying.
The US team is in Group C with Serbia and South Sudan, plus one more team that we’ll find out later. Everyone’s looking forward to possibly seeing Nikola Jokic from Serbia play against the US stars. France, who came second last time, is also in the mix, promising some tough competition right from the start. Meanwhile, FIBA Basketball World Cup champion Germany also joins France in Group B.
US women’s team hasn’t lost since 1992 and they’re hoping to keep that streak going. They’ll be playing against Germany, Japan, and Belgium in Group C. It’s Germany’s first time in the Olympics, and Japan wants to do better than their second place finish last time. Meanwhile, No. 2 seed China will join Serbia, Spain, and Puerto Rico for the women’s basketball preliminary round in Group A.
The early games will be at the Pierre Mauroy Stadium in Lille, which is a big deal. Later, the games move to the Bercy Arena in Paris for the final rounds. The men’s games are scheduled from July 27 to August 10, and the women’s games are from July 28 to August 11.
