The bantamweight division is set for one of its biggest nights in recent memory as WBA champion Antonio Vargas puts his belt on the line against two-division world champion Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez. Rodriguez is officially moving up to the bantamweight division and will face Vargas in a DAZN main event on Saturday, Bam vs Vargas, June 13, at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona. 

The 26-year-old Rodriguez (23-0, 16 KO) has already won belts at super flyweight and flyweight, making his pound-for-pound case over the last four years in dominant fashion. He unified the flyweight division with a 10th-round knockout of Fernando Martinez in November and is expected to return to 115 lbs later in the year before pursuing a showdown with undisputed super bantamweight titlist Naoya Inoue.

Standing in his way is a boxer capable of derailing those plans entirely. Vargas fully understands the magnitude of the opportunity before him, acknowledging that a victory over Rodriguez would be far more than just another successful title defense; it would validate his place among the sport’s elite.

The WBA formally re-established Vargas as bantamweight world champion just days before the fight, following the designation of Japan’s Seiya Tsutsumi as “champion in recess” due to a medical condition. This administrative clarification ensures Rodriguez is challenging for a recognised world title as he seeks to become a three-division champion.

Rodriguez enters as an overwhelming favourite. Per BetUS, Rodriguez is priced at -5000, with Vargas the underdog at +1200. But Vargas (19-1-1, 11 KO) is no pushover, a quality fighter and legitimate contender at 118 lbs, and no easy first test for Bam at the new weight.
