Praggnanandhaa has become the third youngest ever to reach the final.
Indias teenage Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa will aim to become the first Indian Chess World Champion in over two decades when he faces World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen in the ongoing Chess FIDE World Cup 2023 final on August 22 (Tuesday) in Baku, Azerbaijan. Praggnanandhaa reached the Chess FIDE World Cup final after beating world number three Fabiano Caruana of USA in tiebreaks in the semi-final.
He defeated Caruana 3.5-2.5 to reach the final and also confirm his place in the 2024 Candidates Tournament. The classical series between both had ended 1-1, before Praggnanandhaa sealed his victory in the tiebreaker.

Praggnanandhaa’s opponent in the final Magnus Carlsen defeated Nijat Abasov of Azerbaijan 1.5-0.5 in the semi-final. Carlsen had won the opening game and then settled for a draw in the second game to qualify for the final. Praggnanandhaa, meanwhile, has become the third youngest player after the legendary Bobby Fischer and Carlsen himself to qualify for the Candidates tournament.

When and where will R Praggnanandhaa vs Magnus Carlsen match in Chess FIDE World Cup 2023 take place?
The match between R Praggnanandhaa and Magnus Carlsen in Chess FIDE World Cup 2023 final will take place in Baku, Azerbaijan. The match will take place between August 22-24. The opening game of the classic series will take place on August 22 from 4:30 PM, while game 2 will place on August 23 from 4:15 PM onwards. In case of a tie, the match will head into a tie-breaker that will be played on August 24.
