Magnus Carlsen loses for first time as Pipers & Grandmasters Reach GCL 2026 final

Defending champions Alpine APL Pipers and Ganges Grandmasters will face each other in the Season 4 finale of the Global Chess League (GCL 2026), a joint initiative of Tech Mahindra and FIDE, in Bengaluru, despite both teams losing their final league clash but advancing to the title clash as the result in the third match went their way.
Both Alpine Pipers and Ganges Grandmasters entered the final round-robin games on 18 match points, needing just a win over the bottom-placed sides to seal their spots in the final.
However, two-time champions Triveni Continental Kings blew the final race wide open, becoming the first team in Season 4 to beat Alpine Pipers twice, with an 11-6 win in the day’s opener.
That result left Ganges Grandmasters needing just a game point with black pieces against PBG Alaskan Knights to reach the final on superior game points.
They got it done on the top boards — Ian Nepomniachtchi held Viswanathan Anand to a draw on the icon board. Meanwhile, Stavroula Tsolakidou beat Nino Batsiashvili to put the Grandmasters ahead.
But Abhimanyu Mishra, the Player of the Match, outclassed Luke Leon Mendonca in 32 moves on the prodigy board. Meanwhile, Ganges Grandmasters’ Leinier Dominguez Perez lost on time after knocking over a few pieces in a frantic time scramble.

That left FYERS American Gambits needing not only a win over CheQ Mumba Masters, but at least nine game points to pip Alpine Pipers to the final.
Led by Candidates 2026 winner Javokhir Sindarov on the icon board, the Gambits looked on course despite Marc’Andria Maurizzi losing after a blunder against Bardiya Daneshvar on the prodigy board and Carissa Yip beating Sara Khadem.
Sindarov was clearly winning against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, while Nihal Sarin also looked on course to beat M Pranesh — two wins with black that could have taken their team through.
But Nihal made an error under pressure and lost on time, thereby reducing Sindarov’s victory to merely a consolation win as they lost the match 11-6. The two teams will now once again face off on Sunday in the third-place play-off.
Earlier, Alpine APL Pipers looked on course in the first few minutes of the match before Aravindh Chithambaram began tightening the noose around Vidit Gujrathi’s white king. Despite the time scramble in the endgame, Aravindh converted the position and won the match in 36 moves.
It was Alireza Firouzja who finally halted the Pipers’ charge, forcing world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen to resign after 49 moves. It was Carlsen’s first defeat of the competition and Firouzja’s first win — a result that kept his team’s hopes of a third-place play-off alive.

Volodar Murzin’s win over Pranav V on the prodigy board meant that Pipers at least scored six points and kept their chances of making it to the final alive.
“It was good game, and after a sharp opening I found some good moves, and when we went through time trouble, I managed to put pressure and win the game,” said Firouzja.
