The FIDE World Chess Championship 2024 will take place from November 25 to December 14.
The much-coveted FIDE World Chess Championship 2024 will get underway from on November 25 in Singapore. Candidate winner Gukesh D will compete for the Worlds title against reigning World Champion Ding Liren in best of 14 games format. This will be the first time an Indian will play for a Worlds title since Viswanathan Anand played Magnus Carlsen in 2014.
Gukesh had a brilliant run in 2024 and has in some great form. He qualified for the FIDE World Chess Championship 2024 final match by winning the Candidates and securing a spot to challenge the World Champion Ding Liren after he topped the candidates with a score of 9/14. The 18-year-old lost just one match and became the second Indian to qualify for the FIDE World Chess Championship.

The FIDE World Chess Championship will start from November 25 and will go on till December 14. The tournament is taking place in Resorts World Sentosa, Singapore.
Who is the defending Champion and Who is the challenger at FIDE World Chess Championship 2024?
Ding Liren became World Chess Champion in April 2023, after defeating Ian Nepomniachtchi in the 2023 World Chess Championship match. He will defend his title in Singapore. Gukesh D will challenge Ding for the championship match and is the challenger.

What is the format of World Chess Championship 2024?
The tournament will be played in a classical format and will be a best of 14 games. The regulations and format of the World Chess Championship 2024 are slightly different from the 2023 edition. The player who will win 7.5 points will be crowned as the Champion.
The time control for each game in the classical portion of the match is 120 minutes per side for the first 40 moves and 30 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment per move, starting with move 41. In case of a tie after 14 games, a tiebreak will be played. The rules of the tiebreak are:
- There will be four rapid rounds with 15 minutes per side and a 10 second increment. The player will need to score 2.5 points or more to win.
- If the score is still equal, then two rapid games would be played with 10 minutes per side and 5 second increment. The player will need to score 1.5 points or more to win.
- If the score is still equal, then two blitz games would be played with 3 minutes per side and 2 second increment. The player will need to score 1.5 points or more to win.
- If the score is still equal, then a single blitz game with 3 minutes per side and a 2-second increment will be played. Whoever will win the game will win the match. If the game is drawn, then another single blitz game will be played with reversed colour. This process will be repeated until anyone wins the game
A drawing of lots will take place to decide which player will play with white and black pieces.
Players are not allowed to agree to a draw before Black’s 40th move. A draw claim before then is only permitted if a threefold repetition or stalemate has occurred.

Ding and Gukesh have played three classical matches so far. Ding has won two matches with black pieces. Thier most recent match was a draw where Ding was playing with white pieces.

What is the prize money for World Chess Championship 2024?
The total prize money got the event is $2.5 million (Rs 20.8 crore approx.) Each player will receive $200k (Rs 1.67 crore) for every game they win, with the remaining prize money set to be split equally between both players.
In case of a tie-break, the winner will receive $1.3 million (Rs 10.83 crore approx.) while the runner-up will receive $1.2 million.
