Geneva to host Gukesh vs Sindarov FIDE World Chess Championship match 2026

The match will be the youngest world championship contest
Chess‘s ultimate prize will be settled this winter in a city renowned for international diplomacy. FIDE confirmed on July 28 that the 2026 World Championship match between reigning champion Gukesh D and challenger Javokhir Sindarov will be staged in Geneva, Switzerland, running from November 25 to December 15.
The pairing itself is historic as both players will be just 20 years old when the clocks start, making this the youngest undisputed World Championship contest the game has ever seen.
Gukesh reached this point by winning the title in Singapore back in December 2024, beating China’s Ding Liren in the deciding fourteenth game to become the youngest world champion at only 18.

Sindarov earned his shot by winning the 2026 Candidates Tournament in Cyprus with a round to spare, adding that result to his 2025 FIDE World Cup title.
FIDE interim president Viswanathan Anand explained the choice of venue, noting that India, the United States and Cyprus had all put in bids to host the match.
After weighing the various proposals, he explained that the federation settled on neutral territory, calling Geneva a city with a long history of bringing nations together. He added that local fans would get to watch elite chess in person while millions more follow along online.

The format remains the classical fourteen-game structure, with the first player to reach 7.5 points crowned champion outright. If scores remain level after all 14 games, then the match moves to rapid and if necessary, blitz tiebreaks.
The match also arrives just weeks after FIDE’s General Assembly, where a new federation president is due to be elected, with India’s Anand currently holding the role on an interim basis.
