Tournament format and regulations
The tournament follows an eight-player, double round-robin format spanning 14 rounds. The time control is 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, then 30 minutes for the rest of the game, plus a 30-second increment per move starting from move 41.
Tiebreak procedures mirror the Open section, with rapid games followed by blitz games if necessary.
Indian representation
India has two representatives in the Women’s section: Divya Deshmukh, who won the Women’s World Cup 2025, and Vaishali Rameshbabu, sister of Praggnanandhaa. This marks a historic moment for Indian chess, with siblings competing in both Candidates tournaments simultaneously for the second consecutive Candidates.
Koneru Humpy withdrawal and safety measures
India’s Koneru Humpy withdrew from the tournament a week before it began, citing safety concerns in Cyprus due to the ongoing Iran conflict.
“After deep reflection, I have taken the difficult decision to withdraw. No event, no matter how important, can come before personal safety and well-being,” she stated.
In response, FIDE outlined comprehensive safety measures: “Cyprus is a safe country to travel. As a precautionary measure, the hotel is equipped with its own shelter facilities and backup power systems. While such scenarios are purely theoretical, appropriate infrastructure is in place to ensure the safety of all participants.”
