Magnus Carlsen has won the tournament a massive eight times.
The FIDE World Blitz Chess Championship is a format of chess in which games are played at a lightning-fast pace of just three minutes per player, plus a two-second increment per move, this format is a true test of instinct, skill, and composure under immense pressure.
Though recognized by FIDE, the World Blitz Chess Championship before 2012 was held sporadically, focusing on elite players in exclusive formats. From 2012 onward, FIDE formalized the event, introducing the World Rapid & Blitz Championships with annual schedules and open qualification systems, making it more inclusive and competitive.
The 2024 edition of the tournament holds added significance as it offers critical qualification points for the 2026 Candidates Tournament. Recently, India’s Gukesh Dommaraju defeated Ding Liren to become the youngest-ever FIDE World Chess Champion. The winner of the Candidates Tournament will eventually challenge Gukesh for the ultimate Classical championship crown.
