'He believed in me': Sohail Khan recalls Aijaz Khan's role in his historic Kudo feat

Guru Purnima is a celebration of the teachers and mentors who shape lives through their guidance, dedication, and belief. For international Kudo athlete and an officer in the Income Tax Department, Sohail Khan, the occasion is an opportunity to express gratitude to the man who played the most significant role in his journey—Dr. Mohammad Aijaz Khan, Founder of the Kudo Association of Madhya Pradesh.

When Dr. Mohammad Aijaz Khan introduced Kudo to Madhya Pradesh, the sport was virtually unknown. Many questioned his decision and believed that such a new discipline could never create opportunities or recognition for athletes. Undeterred by the criticism, he remained committed to his vision of building not just champions, but disciplined individuals with meaningful careers.

Over the years, his perseverance transformed Sagar into one of India’s prominent centres for Kudo. Under his guidance, several athletes have represented India internationally, won World Championship medals, and secured positions in various Central Government departments, including the Income Tax Department, CGST, Customs and other services.

Among them is Sohail Khan.

Sohail first met Dr. Aijaz Khan while studying in Class V at Mahar Regiment Public School, Sagar. What began as the guidance of an energetic young student soon evolved into a lifelong mentor–student relationship. Dr. Khan recognised Sohail’s potential early and introduced him to martial arts, teaching him discipline, perseverance and the importance of character before competition.

After beginning his journey in Karate and later competing in Taekwondo, Sohail transitioned to Kudo in 2015 under Dr. Khan’s guidance. The partnership went on to create history. Sohail became India’s first Junior Kudo World Champion, later won the Kudo World Cup, and in 2025 became the first Indian senior athlete to win a silver medal at the Kudo World Championship. He also holds the distinction of winning 23 consecutive National Gold Medals, making him one of the country’s most accomplished Kudo athletes.

“Dr. Mohammad Aijaz Khan has been much more than a coach to me. He has been my mentor, guide and greatest source of strength. He taught me that success is built on discipline, humility and consistency. When many doubted the future of Kudo, he never stopped believing in his students. Whatever I have achieved—both as an athlete and as a professional—is a reflection of his guidance, sacrifices and unwavering faith. On this Guru Purnima, I offer my heartfelt gratitude and deepest respect to my Guru. Every milestone in my journey is dedicated to him.”
