Host for the next edition in 2026 is yet to be finalised after the withdrawal of Victoria
The dilemma over the hosting of Commonwealth Games continues to move on but this time it is not the 2026 edition rather the 2030 edition. Alberta’s province Edmonton and Calgary was considered for hosting the 2030 edition of the Commonwealth Games but the recent reports suggests the bid has been cancelled majorly due to huge financial burden.
Tourism and Sport Minister Joseph Schow said “the bill was estimated at C$2.7bn (£1.5bn; $2bn) – a burden too high for the province to bear. Corporate sponsorship model and limited broadcast revenues would have put 93% of costs on taxpayers that is why we have made the decision not to continue pursuing the bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games.”
Further, CGF chief executive Katie Sadleir admitted Alberta’s withdrawal is not great news. “It has given us the opportunity to have a look at who is interested, but at the same time think about what we might do that might be quite different, so that process is ongoing, so that process is ongoing in terms of having discussions with some of our members to talk about what could be the opportunities in the short-term,” Sadleir told insidethegames.
The Commonwealth Games for the second successive edition is looking for a alternate host after Durban was pulled out from hosting the CWG 2022 games. Birmingham in the limited time frame came forward to fill the vacancy. Recently, Australian state of Victoria pulled out from hosting the 2026 edition due to high financial risks which sparkled the future of the Games and the host for the same is yet to be figured out.

However among all these tough times, the 7th edition of Commonwealth Youth Games is scheduled to be held in the Carribean island of Trinidad and Tobago from August 4 to 11. A total of 71 countries are set to participate in the event which is taking place after a six year hiatus.
