Commonwealth Games 2022 Day 1 Updated Results: India blank Pakistan in boxing, badminton

It was a day of many positives and negative results for the Indian contingent.
The 2022 Commonwealth Games have begun and the first day of events was full of excitement and entertainment. Birmingham as the host city is proving to be exceptional and there was a huge lineup of events that involved Indians on Friday. While the women’s Indian cricket team lost their T20 international fixture to Australia, the Indian team in badminton swept away Pakistan in style. In addition to these two events, there were many other disciplines that saw impressive performances by the Indian athletes.
For the first time in the history of the Commonwealth Games, a women’s T20 international cricket tournament is part of the event lineup. Indian team is a strong contender, but it lost its opening match by three wickets as the Aussies chased down a target of 154 runs. There were reasons to celebrate elsewhere for India as the women’s hockey team beat Ghana in the opening fixture by a 5-0 score.

Indian badminton team also made short work of neighbours Pakistan with a 5-0 demolition in the Mixed Team category that saw the likes of P.V. Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth show their quality.
Here is the list of results from Day 1 of the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham:
Cricket
India lost to Australia after setting a target of 154/8 in the first innings across the 20 overs. Showing incredible chasing abilities, Australian batters took the team beyond the target and finished their innings at 157/7 in Group A.
Badminton
India beat Pakistan by 5-0 in the Mixed Team event. The Group A clash was heavily entertaining but very one-sided in the end. Kidambi Srikanth and PV Sindhu registered dominant wins in men's and women's singles respectively, while the doubles events also saw India win in a ruthless manner.
Hockey
Indian women’s team opened their campaign with a comfortable 5-0 win over Ghana. Gurjit Kaur struck a brace while Neha, Sangita and Salima got a goal each.
Table Tennis
In Women’s Team Qualifying Round 1, India beat South Africa 3-0 to open their campaign on a positive note. Later, they beat Fiji by 3-0 as well. The Indian men’s team won 3-0 against Barbados and Singapore respectively in the Men’s Qualifying Round 1.

Boxing
Shiva Thapa, one of India’s strong medal hopes was up against Pakistan’s Suleman Baloch in the 63.5kg category. The Round of 32 bout ended 5-0 in the Indian’s favour.
Swimming
Kushagra Rawat finished 8th with timing 3:57.45 in 400m FreeStyle Heat 3. Sajan Prakash came 8th with a timing of 25.01s in the 50m Butterfly Heat 6. Srihari Nataraj was impressive as he finished 3rd with timing 54.68s in the 100m BackStroke Heat 4, taking him into the semi-finals. Later, Srihari advanced to the final of the men's 100m backstroke event after clocking 54.55s to finish overall seventh in the semifinal.

Cycling - Track
Vishvajeet Singh, Naman Kapil, Venkappa Shivappa Kengalugutti, Anantha Narayanan, and Dinesh Kumar came sixth with a timing of 4:12.865s in Men’s Team Pursuit 4000M Qualification.
Mayuri Lute, Triyasha Paul and Shushikala Agashe recorded a timing of 51.433s to finish seventh in the Women’s Team Sprint Qualification.
Y Rojit Singh, L Ronaldo Singh, E David Beckham, and Esow Alben finished sixth with timing 44.702s in the Men’s Team Sprint Qualification.
Triathlon
Sanjana Joshi (1:09:00) and Pragnya Mohan (1:07:27) finish 28th and 26th respectively in the Women’s Individual Sprint Distance Final. On the other hand, Adarsh MS finished 30th and Vishwanath Yadav finished 33th respectively in the Men’s Individual Sprint Distance Final.
Lawn Bowls
Dee Hogan of Scotland beat Tania Choudhury by 21-10 in Women’s Singles Round 1. Later, Tania Choudhury narrowly lost by 20-21 to Daphne Arthur Almond from Falkland Island in Women’s Singles Round 1.
India lost to New Zealand by 6-23 in Men’s Triples Round 1. Then, Scotland beat India by 19-12 in Men’s Triples Round 1. England beat India by 18-9 in the Women’s Four Round 1. Later, India beat the Cook Islands by 15-9 in Women’s Four Round 1.
Elsewhere, Malaysia beat India by 17-14 in the Men’s Pair Round 1. India beat the Falkland Islands by 36-4 in the Men’s Pair Round 1.
Squash
The youngest Indian athlete at the 2022 CWG Anahat Singh beat Jada Ross of St. Vincente & Grenadines by 3-0 in the Women’s Singles Round of 64. Abhay Singh also won his fixture by 3-0 against Joe Chapman of the British Virgin Islands in the Men’s Singles Round of 64.
