Commonwealth Games 2022 Day 2 Updated Results: India clinch four medals in weightlifting
It was a successful day for the Indians as the contingent opened its account by winning multiple medals.
Indian athletes are giving their utmost at the ongoing 2022 Commonwealth Games (CWG) in Birmingham. Day 2 saw several high-profile athletes in action. On a successful day, India won its first gold through the excellent Mirabai Chanu in the 49kg weightlifting category. She set a new Commonwealth Games record by lifting a total of 201 kg. Three more medals were won by the Indian athletes in the weightlifting discipline on Saturday.
Apart from success in weightlifting, Indian badminton stars also gave a good account of themselves. They swept away Sri Lanka in the team event after demolishing Pakistan yesterday. There was disappointment in store for Manika Batra and Co. in the table tennis Women’s Team event as they crashed out in the quarter-finals.

Weightlifting
Indian athletes won four medals in weightlifting on Saturday. Mirabai Chanu was in a league of her own in the process of securing gold in the 49kg category. She wins India’s first gold medal at the 2022 CWG in Birmingham.
Earlier in the day, Sanket Sargar won India’s first medal at the 2022 CWG by winning silver in the 55kg category. Gururaja Poojary was the second athlete of the day to win a medal as he won bronze in the 61kg category. Later past midnight, Bindyarani Devi brought out cheers once again with a stunning third attempt in Clean & Jerk to secure a silver medal in the women's 55kg category.
Table Tennis
India men’s team beat Northern Ireland by 3-0 to finish top of their group with three wins out of three. The women’s team also won three out of three matches by winning their last group encounter by 3-0 against Guyana.
Indian women’s team met Malaysia in the quarter-final. After leading 3-2 at one point, Manika Batra lost to a lower-ranked Ying Ho to take the game into the decider where Reeth Tennison also lost to the same opponent. Malaysian players were ecstatic after eliminating the reigning gold medal winners in the Women’s Team event, causing one of the major upsets of the tournament.
Hockey
Indian women’s hockey team met Wales in their second Pool A clash. Thanks to a solid overall performance in the second quarter the Indian team went into a 2-0 lead by Wales scored one in the third quarter to set up a delicious fourth. Finally, the match ended 3-1 in India's favour thanks to a second from Katariya in the fourth quarter.
Boxing
Mohammad Husammuddin won his pre-quarterfinal clash against Amzolele Dyeyi of South Africa by unanimous verdict. He will face his next opponent from Bangladesh in the 57kg category on Monday.
Lovlina Borgohain, the Tokyo Olympic medallist met Ariane Nicholson of New Zealand in the Round of 16 of the 70kg category. The Indian made short work of her opponent and won the bout to advance in her bracket.

Badminton
Indian team outclassed Sri Lanka by 5-0 to win their second clash in Group A of the Mixed Team event. They also smashed Australia 4-1 in their final Group Stage game.
Marathon
Nitender Singh Rawat recorded a time of 2:19:22 to finish 12th in the Men’s Marathon. He was 8:27 minutes behind the leader and more than three minutes slower than his personal best.

Swimming
Kushagra Rawat finished last in the heat in Men’s 200m freestyle with a time of 1:54.56. He finished 24th overall, thereby missing out on a place in the final. Elsewhere, Srihari Nataraj finished seventh in the men's 100m backstroke final with a 51. 31s clock time.
Squash
Saurav Ghosal secured a 3-0 against Shamil Wakeel of Sri Lanka to cruise into the pre-quarters. Ramit Tandon of India bowed out due to injury and his opponent got a walkover in the first round.
Joshna Chinappa sailed into the pre-quarters with a 3-0 win in the second round after getting a first-round bye. Sunayna Kuruvilla lost in the second round against Aifa Azman by 3-0. India's youngest athlete Anahat Singh also lost by 3-0 to Emily Whitlock of Wales.
Cycling
Vishavjeet Singh and Dinesh Kumar finished 18th and 19th in the men’s 4000m individual pursuit qualifying and are out of medal contention in Birmingham. David Beckham finished fourth in his Men’s Keiren first-round heat while Esow Alben finished third in his heat. Both made it into the repechage round. Both of them finished second in their respective repechage heats as well.
Gymnastics
India’s Ruthuja Nataraj and Pranati Nayak scored 46.250 and 43.500 to place 6th and 14th in the Women’s Team Final and Individual Qualification. The top 18 athletes would go on to qualify for the All-Around final.

India defeated Sri Lanka 5-0 in mixed team badminton in their Group A clash.
Hockey:-
India won against Australia; Mixed team event group A – Hockey
Protistha Samanta receives a total of 11.950 for the vault.
Table Tennis:-
India Men’s Table Tennis team defeated Northern Ireland by 3-0
India beat Guyana 3-0 in Table Tennis
WEIGHTLIFTING:-

Women’s Sprint qualifying – Mayuri Liye finished 20th while Triyasha Paul finished 23rd.
Meenakshi finished 15th in Women’s 3000m Individual Pursuit qualifying
Men’s 4000m Individual Pursuit Qualifying – Vishavjeet Singh finished 18th while Dinesh Kumar finished at 19th position
Men’s Keirin – First Round – David Beckham Elkatohchoongo finished 4th while Esow Alben finished 6th in their heats and qualified for repechage rounds
Men’s Keirin – First Round Repechages – David Beckham Elkatohchoongo, Esow Alben finished 2nd in their respective heats and failed to qualify to 2nd round

Joshana Chinappa won 3-0 beating Meagob Best in Women’s Singles in Round of 32
