Saurav Ghosal wins historic bronze in men's singles squash

This is Inda's first-ever medal in singles event at the Commonwealth Games

India's Squash giant Saurav Ghosal added another medal to India’s tally by winning a historic bronze in the Men’s Singles. He outclassed England’s James Willstrop 11-6, 11-1, 11-4 in the bronze medal match at Commonwealth Games 2022.

This was India’s first-ever medal in Squash Singles at the CWG since the sport was added in 1998. So far, the Indian contingent has won several titles in Doubles and Mixed Doubles, but this Singles medal will definitely be special.

Ghosal dominated from the first point onwards and was quick with his movements. His powerful shots were the icing on the cake. But during his semifinal stint, the story was altogether different as the Arjuna Awardee lost the match against New Zealand’s Paul Coll 9-11, 4-11, 1-11, which eventually gave him the chance to at least grab a bronze. Throughout that game against Willstrop, it never looked like Ghosal was falling behind.

Earlier, the 35-year-old opened his campaign with a win over Sri Lanka’s Shamil Wakeel 11-4, 11-4, 11-6. He then defeated Canada's David Baillargeon 11-6, 11-2, 11-6 to advance to the quarterfinals, where the Kolkata-born player faced Scotland's Greg Lobban. He beat the Scotsman, 11-5, 8-11, 11-7, 11-3. Overall, it was a satisfying performance from the legendary player.

Now, Saurav Ghosal will pair up with Dipika Pallikal in their Mixed Doubles Rounds. Earlier in the day, Joshna Chinappa and Harinder Pal Singh Sandhu defeated Sri Lanka’s Yeheni Kuruppu and Ravindu Laksiri 8-11, 11-4, 11-3 and have now advanced to CWG pre-quarters.

Talking about the pair of Ghosal and Pallikal, they have been at their best more often than not. Earlier this year, the duo defeated England’s Alison Waters and Adrian Waller in the final to clinch the World Doubles Squash Championships. This time as well, fans would be expecting gold from this special pair.
