Commonwealth Games 2026 Day 1 Results: Jhandu Kumar wins India's first medal with para powerlifting bronze

Jhandu Kumar opened India’s medal account at the Commonwealth Games 2026, clinching bronze in the men’s heavyweight para powerlifting event.

Day 1 of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026 saw several Indian athletes in action across para powerlifting, swimming, artistic gymnastics, lawn bowls, and boxing. The day was full of ups and downs; however, before ending, it gave Indian fans a reason to celebrate.

Srihari Nataraj had a decent performance in the heats but finished seventh, failing to qualify for the medal round. Meanwhile, Budigina nearly missed a medal by finishing fourth in the men’s S13 100m freestyle final.

Tapan Mohanty, Swathish KP, Tapeshwarnath Das, and Yogeshwar Singh completed the men’s team and individual qualification rounds while Jadumani Singh secured a comfortable and promising 5-0 win over Scotland’s Aaron Cullen.

Ashok Kumar Malik and Parmjeet Kumar missed out on a medal in the men’s lightweight. However, Jhandu Kumar made it clear that the Indian contingent takes home a medal on the first day. Jaspreet Kaur, Suman Devi and Kasthuri Rajamani also failed to secure a podium finish.

In lawn bowls, Rupa Rani Tirkey and Pinki Singh continued India’s impressive campaign while Putul Sonowal overcame Falkland Islands’ Cecil Alexander in a tightly contested encounter.

Swimming

• Ravi Veera Venkata Bhavani Karthik (RVVBK) Budigina finished third in Heat 1 of men’s 100m freestyle S13 to qualify for the final.
• Ali Imam also progressed to the final.
• In the evening session, Budigina finished fourth and Ali Imam seventh in the men’s 100m freestyle final S13.
• Srihari Nataraj finished fifth in his 50m backstroke heat with a time of 25.52 seconds to qualify for the semi-finals.
• Nataraj placed seventh in the 50m backstroke semi-final and missed out on a place in the final.

Artistic Gymnastics

India’s quartet of Tapan Mohanty, Swathish KP, Tapeshwarnath Das, and Yogeshwar Singh competed in the men’s team and individual qualification rounds at the Commonwealth Games 2026.

The Indian gymnasts’ chances of team medals and qualification for individual finals remained dependent on the results from the final subdivision.

Para Powerlifting

• Jhandu Kumar won bronze in men’s heavyweight category, with a total score of 130.9 points [Best Lift = 190kg].
• Sudhir finished 6th in men’s heavyweight category with a total score of 114.1 points [Best Lift = 183kg].

Men’s Lightweight

• Ashok Kumar Malik successfully lifted 195kg to move into bronze-medal contention before missing out on the podium. He also attempted 205kg in his final lift but could not improve his position.
• Parmjeet Kumar failed to clear 179kg on one of his attempts.
• Final standings:
  • Ashok Kumar Malik — 4th
  • Parmjeet Kumar — 7th

Women’s Lightweight

• Jaspreet Kaur opened with a successful 95kg lift, missed 99kg, and then cleared 100kg in her final attempt to finish on top of Group B in the Commonwealth Games 2026.
• Suman Devi successfully lifted 100kg in her opening attempt.
• Final standings:
  • Jaspreet Kaur — 6th
  • Suman Devi — 7th

Women’s Heavyweight

• Kasthuri Rajamani was unable to register a successful lift.

Lawn Bowls

Women’s Pairs

Rupa Rani Tirkey and Pinki Singh continued India’s impressive campaign by defeating South Africa 2-0 in their Section B clash.

The Indian pair edged the opening set 6-4 before sealing the second set 7-5, registering their second consecutive victory in the competition.

Men’s Singles

Putul Sonowal overcame Falkland Islands’ Cecil Alexander in a tightly contested encounter. After trailing 0-2 early, Sonowal forced a tiebreak and produced a superb final bowl to secure a 1-0 victory.

Boxing

• Jadumani Singh was scheduled to face Scotland’s Aaron Cullen in the men’s 55kg category at the Commonwealth Games 2026.
