India last hosted the CWG in 2010.

The Indian Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved a proposal by the Sports Ministry to submit a bid for hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad.

It also gave its approval to sign the Host Collaboration Agreement (HCA) along with the required guarantees from concerned Ministries, Departments, and Authorities.

Should India’s bid be accepted and the nation is subsequently granted hosting rights, the Gujarat government will receive a substantial grant-in-aid to organise the event, said an official statement.

The release also added that Ahmedabad has been chosen as the host city for the Commonwealth Games 2030 for its world-class stadiums, cutting-edge training facilities, and passionate sporting culture.

The city has previously hosted major international events, including the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Final at the Narendra Modi Stadium, the largest stadium in the world.

According to the release, athletes from 72 countries are expected to participate in the Games. In addition to athletes, the event will see participation of coaches, technical officials, media personnel, and tourists, benefiting local businesses and generating revenue.

“Beyond sports, hosting the CWG in India would leave a lasting impact boosting tourism, creating jobs and inspiring millions of young athletes,” says the Press Information Beaureu release.

“Apart from that, a large number of professionals will be getting opportunities in Sports science, Event Operations and Management, Logistics and transport coordinators, Broadcast and media, IT and communications, Public relations and communications and in other fields as well.”

The release also pointed out that hosting such a globally prestigious event in India will foster a strong sense of national pride and unity.

It read, “It will provide a shared national experience and boost the morale of our Nation. It will inspire a new generation of athletes to enter into Sports as a career option and encourage greater participation in sports at all levels.”
