India are likely to compete in seven finals on the opening day of the event
The wait for another edition of CWG will finally come to an end as Glasgow officially takes center stage as host of the Commonwealth Games 2026, scheduled to take place from July 23 to August 2.
For a nation that is finding its feet in sports other than cricket, attention will shift to the multi-sporting event, providing a vastly different landscape.
The Games which were supposed to take in Victoria, Australia, got dropped out due to ballooning budget projections.
Glasgow stepped up as a replacement host on a tightly streamlined budget, resulting in a significantly reduced program. This year’s event features just 10 core sports distributed across four venues within an eight-mile corridor.

Why just 10 core sports in Commonwealth Games 2026?
The drastic reduction in sports poses a direct threat to India’s traditional medal haul. Heavy-hitting disciplines that historically generated nearly 50 percent of India’s medals—such as wrestling, shooting, badminton, table tennis, and hockey—were dropped from the Glasgow roster to cut costs.
Despite these cuts, India has fielded a strong 125-member contingent across regular and para-sporting events, aiming to maximize returns in the sports that remain.
